Engineering, in Fond du Lac; 2010 DJ Bruised Head, Shey Eagle Bear, students from University of Lethbridge, AB, in Kainai High school, Standoff, AB; 2010 Our Success To evaluate the effect of the program on theattitudes of the students’ towards science, two surveys were completed by the students’, one when the ambassadors arrived at the school, and the other right before the Ambassadors departed. The research information gathered from thesurveys is used to continually improve and expand the program to meet the needs of the students and teachers. Some of the results are shown below. Q3: Do you think Girls and Women like Science? • Our Communities • The Pas, and OpaskwayakFirst Nation (MB) – 2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10 • -- 6 schools, grades 5-8 • -- approx. 350 children each year • -- 4 ambassadors since 2007 • Muscoday and Beardy’s – 2007/08 • -- 2 schools, grades 5-6 • -- approx. 120 children • -- 1 ambassador • Muscowpetung – 2008/09, 2009/10 • -- 1 school, grades 4-8 • -- approx. 60 children each year • -- 1 ambassador each year • Mosquito – 2009/2010 • -1 school, grades K-8 • - approx. 300 children • -- 1 ambassador • Wollaston Lake – 2009/2010 • -- 1 school, grades 9-12 • -- approx 100 students • -- 1 ambassador The Science Ambassadors are senior undergraduate or graduate students in the natural sciences and engineering who spend an extended period of time (for example, 4-5 weeks) in schools with high proportion of aboriginal students. The Science Ambassadors assist teachers in presenting science concepts from the curriculum in exciting and culturally-relevant ways. They prepare hands-on activities, experiments and demonstrations and engage the students as role-models.
