  3. Verbs – What We Know • Verbs represent _________ or ______ of ______ in a sentence. • The stem vowel of 1st conjugation verbs is ____. • The stem vowel of 2nd conjugation verbs is ____.

  4. Present Stem of 1st 3 Conjugations Conjugation Known by Present Stem (stem vowel) First ā portā Second ē docē Third (short) e pone • To get the present stem, we _____ the –re ending from the infinitive form of the verb, which is the 2nd principal part.

  5. Pay Attention!!! • The short e of the 3rd conjugation stem changes to –i- when conjugated, EXCEPT in: • 1st person singular where it is omitted before the –o ending • 3rd person plural where it becomes a –u-.

  6. Conjugating a 3rd Conjugation Verbpono, ponere, posui, positus pono ponimus ponis ponitis ponit ponunt Present Imperative pone – put! Ponite – put! (pon-eh – short e sound) (pon-it-eh – short i and e) *Note– the plural imperative makes use of the -i that most of the conjugation’s words use!

  7. Endings and Stems • The endings of all conjugations are the same in PRESENT tense. • The PERFECT stem of 3rd conjugation is often very different from the present stem. This also happens in 2nd conjugation, but is much more common in the 3rd. Memorize the 4 principal parts!!!

  8. Apposition • Apposition (ad + pono = place near) • When words are placed in apposition to another word, they ‘stand beside’ the words to add further information. • This is different from opposition, where things stand against each other (like an opponent). • Example – Dominum meum, Lucium Cornelium, exspecto. I wait for my master, Lucius Cornelius. Lucius Cornelius is giving more information about ‘my master’. Words in apposition will be in the same case as the words they give more information about.

  9. Conjugation Practice Ticket Out the Door • Conjugate the word ‘mitto’ in present tense. (mitto, mittere, misī, missus)
