Rio Beaches: • The world’s most famous strip of sand, Copacabana beach is nicknamed by the locals “Little Princess of the Sea”. • Ipanema beach is located in the neighborhood of the same name, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. In the winter the surf can reach 9 feet. • Barra da Tijuca Beach, sweeping some eighteen kilometers south of the city, this magnificent beach is the longest in Rio. Clear waters and perfect waves make this beach a favorite with surfers, boogie-boarders, windsurfers and surf-casters.

  3. Fun Facts: 1.Tourism is also a large industry in Rio de Janeiro. The city is Brazil's main tourist attraction and it also receives more international visits per year than any other city in South America with around 2.82 million. 2.Rio de Janeiro natives are called Cariocas (care-ree-o-cas). 3.Rio will be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games and the last match of the 2014 World-Cup. 4. Rio has over 46 miles (74km) of bicycle pathways, most stretching alongside the beaches. 5.Rio de Janeiro’s is nicknamed Cidade Maravilhosa (The Marvelous City).

  5. Location ( Rio, Brazil) 1. The city of Rio is nicknamed the marvelous city and has been named a Global city. 2. Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the state Rio de Janeiro, and is the second largest city in the South american country of Brazil. 3. It is considered the largest tourist stay of the southern hemisphere and is famous for its beaches. 4.Europeans first landed on present-day Rio de Janeiro in 1502 when a Portuguese expedition reached Guanabara Bay. Sixty-three years later, on March 1, 1565, the city of Rio de Janeiro was officially founded by the Portuguese. 5.As of 2010, the city is estimated to have a population of over 6,000,000 people and 14,000,00 in Rio’s entire metropolitan area.

  6. Tourist Attractions 1. Tourism is also a large industry in Rio de Janeiro. The city is Brazil's main tourist attraction and it also receives more international visits per year than any other city in South America with around 2.82 million. 2. If you are looking to spend a day on the beach, lazing in the sun, or snorkeling in the shallow water, then Rio offers many top spots. 3.One of the best places to visit on one of the Rio de Janeiro tours is the Tijuca National Park. Located in Rio de Janeiro, this urban forest is the largest in the world, covering 32 square kilometers. 4. You can also Grab a map and follow the other tourist up to the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue, which is the second largest statue of Jesus in the world. This iconic statue watches over the marvelous city of Rio de Janeiro.

  7. Rio De Janeiro Flag The rio flag consists of a white background with two blue diagonal stripes. Also in the middle is the rio de janeiro coat of arms in red. Its design has not changed since it was adopted on july 8, 1908

Carnival! • Along with all the other carnivals of Brazil, the Rio de Janeiro carnival marks the beginning of Lent, the forty-day sacrifice period before Easter. • In 2011, 4.9 million people took part in the festivities in Rio. 400,000 of those were foreigners. • The first festival dates back as far as 1723. • There are more than 2 million people on the streets every day during the carnival • More than 200 different samba schools from Rio participate • The main carnival parades takes place in the Sambadrome • The samba dance, originating from the Bahia region with African rhythms, came to Rio de Janeiro around 1920 • The carnival is a national holiday in Brazil • Many Rio habitants not wanting to participate in the festival, actually leave the city for quieter places during the festival • The Rio de Janeiro carnival is often cited as the “world’s largest party”.

  10. Samba 1.An old Brazilian style of dance with many variations, is African in origin. It has been performed as a street dance at carnival, the pre-Lenten celebration, for almost 100 years. 2. Samba has a very specific rhythm, highlighted to its best by characteristic Brazilian musical instruments: originally called tamborim, chocalho, reco-re. 3.To achieve the true character ofthe samba, a dancer must give it a happy, flirtatious and exuberant interpretation

  11. Food Brazilian food is rich and diverse, mixing Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German, African, and Amerindian influences. Brazil’s climate is mostly tropical and the terrain and climate favor the production of coffee, a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and cattle. Because of its diverse heritage, Brazilian recipes are amazing and flavored with fiery spices and tropical ingredients. Traditional Brazilian food uses the land’s native ingredients of beans, rice and manioc flour.
