Hernando de Soto: The First European to Explore the Mississippi River

Born in 1500 in Spain, Hernando de Soto aimed to explore the New World for gold and glory. In 1539, he arrived in Florida, embarking on a challenging expedition that led him across modern-day Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Despite his efforts, he failed to find the gold he sought. His legacy includes being the first European to document the Mississippi River's discovery. De Soto's journey contributed significantly to the European understanding of the southeastern United States, though he ultimately succumbed to fever on May 21, 1542.
