Case Background: • February 71985 • DEA special agent, Camarena, was abducted near the U.S Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico • Captain Zavala, a DEA source, was abducted from a car near the Guadalajara airport after Camarena was abducted • One of the largest investigations ever conducted by the DEA

  3. Who, what, when, where, why? • Who: DEA agents Enrique Camarena and Captian Zavala • What: They were abducted, tortured, and murdered • When: February 7, 1985 • Where: Guadalajara, Mexico • Why: The DEA agents were trying to bust the Mexican drug lords

  4. Major Players • Rene Verdugo drug trafficker was considered to be a high ranking member of the Caro-Quintero gang • Sergio Espino-Verdin former federal comandante who aided in the kidnapping and murder of a federal agent

  5. Crime • Camarena, a Mexican-American under cover agent for the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration, was abducted and then tortured and murdered while undercover in Mexico.

  6. Suspects • Drug lord Miguel Angel Felix Gallarado ordered the kidnapping of Camarena on February 7, 1985 • Humberto Alvarez Machain physician who prolonged Camarena’s life so the torture could continue • Zuno Acre had ties to corrupt Mexican officials who helped in covering up the murder • Javier Vaquez Velasco • Juan Ramon Matta Ballesteros • Juan Jose Bernabe Ramirez • Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo • Rafael Caro Quintero • Surgio Espino-Verdin Responsible for Kidnapping

  7. Apprehension or not of suspect • Felix Gallardo was under political protection • Suspects for the kidnapping of Camarena were apprehended by the DEA and brought to Court • Machain (physician) was also apprehended

  8. Evidence found • The two bodied that were found were covered in plastics bags • Hair and blood were taken from the bodies • The soil on the bodies was different from where the bodies were found • Found a small building that was believed too have held the 2 prisoners • Entire room was processed for fingerprints, hairs, and fibers • Building contained burial sheets, rope, pillowcases • Hair samples were taken from suspects so they could be matched to the hair found on the bodies • On the body were fibers from a carpet which matched that of the suspects

  9. Trial or no trial • Trail took place in July of 1988 • In the U.S district court in Los Angeles, California

  10. Verdict/Sentence • After an 8 week trial, all of the defendants were found guilty • They were convicted on all counts and are currently serving lengthy sentences

  11. Unanswered Questions • What was the point of torturing Camarena? • Were the culprits trying to get information out of him? • Did Camarena’s culture play a part in his torturing in kidnapping? • Were the drug lords jealous because he was an American citizen of Mexican decent?
