Mathew 5:1-123 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Translation = “Happy” or “Blessed” • “Joy” is a trait of maturity in John 15:1-17 • More than a subjective feeling - It is an objective condition or status • Defined by promises associated with each quality listed (spiritual & substantive) • Both present and future • The result of salvation – not the basis for salvation

  9. To be poor in spirit is… To recognize and own my UNWORTHINESS before God. (Luke 15:21) To be completely DEPENDENT upon God. (2 Corinthians 12:9; Colossians 1:29) To understand that without Him I can do NOTHING. (John 15:5)
