  2. Forgery • The process in making, adapting, or imitating objects, statistics, or documents with the intent to deceive • Counterfeiting is when you forge money or currency.

  3. Frank Abagnale • Known for being a confidence trickster, a check forger, imposter, and an escape artist • In the 1960s, he passed 2.5 million dollars worth of meticulously forged checks across 26 countries over the course of 5 years.

  4. Frank Abagnale continued… • He had 8 different identities including: an airline pilot, a doctor, a bureau of prison’s agent, and a lawyer. • He escaped from police custody twice before he was 21. • The FBI caught him and he served 12 years. • The government used his skills to assist in catching other forgers.

  5. Chen Chiang Liu • He dealt in counterfeiting $100 bills authentic enough to trick bill validators in Las Vegas slot machines. • The bills were North Korean produced “supernotes”, which are a high powered counterfeit currency.

  6. Chen Chiang Liu continued… • Between April and August of 2005, Liu delivered 2 million dollars in bogus $100 bills to an undercover FBI agent. • He was caught when Caesars’ Palace officials contacted federal authorities after discovering 7 counterfeit $100 bills. • FBI agents searched his vehicle and found 3 envelopes containing 301 supernotes.

  7. Handwriting Analysis • Used when there is a suspect in a crime and the evidence includes a handwritten note. • Experts compare the evidence and the suspect’s handwriting sample to see if it matches. • The experts check for differences in each sample, and if no differences are found, then it is a match.
