  1. Down Syndrome Kira Colon, Lucy Jung Period 3

  2. Introduction • Down Syndrome occurs when there is a extra copy of 21 chromosomes. • Neither dominant or recessive, it is called trisomy 21 because the affected person has three number 21 chromosomes. • Before fertilization, occasionally a part of chromosome 21 breaks off during cell division

  3. Symptoms and appearances • Down syndrome symptoms depend on person to person, it has a wide range from mild to severe. • Doctors can usually recognize a baby born with down syndrome • Head may be small but abnormally shaped • Flattened nose • Small ears and mouth • Slow learning

  4. Population, race, and gender • Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic disorders. • It occurs to about 1 in 800 (about 3,400) babies a year in the US. • Over 5.8 million people have Down Syndrome • Down syndrome is evenly distributed with all races • Males were slightly more common than females:  • Male- 74% • Female- 66%

  5. Life span and treatment • Average life span of someone with Down Syndrome is 55-60 years • There is no specific treatment: • heart defects may require surgery • getting active is important, before beginning sports activities, the child's neck and hips should be examined • No cure is available because it is a problem with the chromosomes, however early intervention can help many people with down syndrome live healthy lives well into adulthood • If you have this disease, regular checkups, medications, surgery, and counseling are necessary.

  6. How Down syndrome effects family…. • Researchers found almost all families love and value their child with Down Syndrome. • Emotionally: families do experience extra demands and stress but they find the resources to cope positively • Financially: surgeries, medications, and therapy are usually high expenses • Tip • Treat children with Down syndrome like their siblings • A strong home base will give the child the background to cope with anything

  7. What I learned from project….. • It is very common than expected • They know whether they are loved or rejected by their parents, so they mostly react to love and security. • People with Down Syndrome are genetically just like us ; except they have an extra chromosome • They need surgeries, medications, and therapy to help deal with their condition
