Individual Advanced Development Program ‘The Goal of an IAD is to inspire cadets to a lifetime of service by providing them an opportunity to serve within military units, governmental agencies, and public organizations; broaden cadet perspectivethrough experience in diverse, applied activities; and provide cadets with practical advanced education and training attendant to their professional responsibilities as cadet leaders and future commissioned officers’ As stated in USMA Policy Memorandum Subject: Individual Advanced Development

Why AIADs? • USMA Mission:To educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army. ACADEMY ACADEMIC OUTCOME GOAL • The United States Military Academy envisions that graduates will be…commissioned leaders of character who, in preparation for the intellectual and ethical responsibilities of officership, are broadly educated, professionally skilled, moral-ethically and physically fit, and are committed to continued growth and development both as Army officers and as American citizens.

AIAD Selection Process STEP 1: -Take time to think about what type of AIAD you want to do and why. -(It’s ok to look at AIADs outside of DSS) STEP 2: -Discuss with your TAC how an AIAD could fit into your summer schedule. *STEP 3: -Rank order your AIAD preferences in AMS (23JAN) (Search for DSS AIAD’s under military instruction department, or by each AIADs #.) STEP 4: -Notification via email by MAJ Beaulieu or MAJ Fursman once AIAD window is closed Cadet Picks – OIC Selection: STEP 5: -Meet with AIAD sponsor for interview. Priority for AIAD slots goes to: -Minimum 2.8 GPA -Favorable Disciplinary Standing -Can articulate why you want to attend the AIAD and why the AIAD is beneficial to your professional and personal growth as a future Army officer. ***Final Approval by LTC DeToy and the Admin Process Begins***

  6. 11320-Israeli Tactical Command Academy Location: Israel When: Block 2/3 (Mid Jul – Re-orgy Week) Allocation: x4 Cadets Description:Cadets and one DSS faculty member are escorted throughout Israel by students at the Israeli Tactical Command College. This AIAD focuses on tactical training and leadership, as well as a broader education in security studies. The AIAD coincides with the Academy’s field training cycle and allows cadets the opportunity to observe Israeli Defense Force units in a field training environment. AIAD also includes travel within Israel and meeting with platoon leaders of IDF units. Sponsor: MAJ Beaulieu

  7. 11317-Pfizer Global Operations Center Location: New York City, New York When: Flexible (2-3 week window) Allocation: x2 Cadets Description: Cadets work under the auspices of the Director of Headquarters Security in the Global Security Operations Center. During this AIAD cadets would work with members of the Pfizer Cooperation towards the implementation and execution of a Crisis Management Team exercise.    Sponsor: MAJ Beaulieu

  8. 11319-Naval Postgraduate School: Defense Analysis and National Security Affairs Department Location: Monterey, California When: Block 3 (2 Jul – 10 Aug) Allocation: x2 Cadets Description:Cadets will attend classes with graduate students and military members and support research in one of two NPS departments. The AIAD is best suited for cadets who desire to apply the experience towards DS489 or work in another DSS or DSS related course. Sponsor: MAJ Beaulieu

  9. 11315-Program for Advanced Security Studies, Marshall Center Location: Garmisch, Germany When: Early / Block 1 (TBD) Allocation: x1 Cadet Description:Cadet will attend selected weekly seminars dealing with specific and relevant security issues along with graduate students at the center. Cadet will participate as small group members assigned a current strategic security issue and will deliver a presentation on their findings. Cadets will also have time to tour the various tourist sites in Bavaria. Sponsored by SOSH. Sponsor: MAJ Beaulieu

  10. 10324-NWC Strategy and Security Studies Conference Location: Newport, Rhode Island When: Block I (1-15 JUN) Allocation: x2 Cadet Description: Cadet will work with the NWC Strategy and Policy Department in planning and executing the annual Strategy and Security Studies Conference. Cadet will have the opportunity to attend t he conference panel discussions and apply the knowledge gained to future academic pursuits.Cadets will also participate in the strategy warfighter with senior students enrolled in the Naval War College.   12. Federal Agency Opportunities • 11318 - ATF- Virginia and D.C. • Office of Strategic Intelligence • Flexible timeframe • Work with ATF agencies in real world planning and problem solving • 11321- DEA- Quantico, VA • Observe and participate in the DEA training course in Quantico • When: TBD

AIAD Milestones 2012 • Cadets- Choose AIAD in CIS/AMS • 23 JAN – 30 JAN • MAJ Beaulieu begin assignment/interview process/informs cadets according to: • 1st Picks: TBD FEB • 2nd Picks: TBD FEB • 3rd Picks: TBD FEB • 4th Picks: TBD FEB • Scrub: TBD FEB (Almost every cadet gets an AIAD by now) • USCC Scheduler Publishes Summer Assignments • TBD • Cadets- Prepare for AIAD • Communicate with sponsoring agency • Prep personal affairs – passports, TDY orders, country clearance, etc • Cadets- Go on AIAD • 29 MAY-10 AUGUST

AIAD Tips • It’s never too early to start planning for an AIAD • If you are setting up your own AIAD, ensure you have a fairly detailed plan of action before meeting with the AIAD Coordinator • Understand that an AIAD is a professional endeavor • Ensure good communication and cross talk between you, your TACs, and the AIAD Coordinator (MAJ Beaulieu / MAJ Fursman) • Identify summer training requirements as early as possible and frequently update your TAC/AIAD Coordinator on where you stand • Ensure you have a valid Passport, Visa, and Security Clearance if applicable • Be in good Academic and Discipline Standing • Be proactive on your AIAD.
