Persuasive Writing. Rhetoric: the art of effective persuasive speaking or writing. Aristotle’s Rhetoric. He taught three types of persuasion, which we still use today, both in persuasive and speech writing: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. 1. Ethos.

  1. Persuasive Writing Rhetoric: the art of effective persuasive speaking or writing.

  2. Aristotle’s Rhetoric • He taught three types of persuasion, which we still use today, both in persuasive and speech writing: • Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

  3. 1. Ethos • This means credibility: You must establish yourself as an authority on the subject that you are writing about. • For example, in a paper you would make a statement, not an opinion.

  4. Example of Ethos: • Do not write: In my opinion or I think that • NO: “I think that the new law about teenage drivers license requirements is stupid.” • YES: “The new law about teenage drivers license requirements is not an effective way to make sure that all teenagers drive responsibly.”

  5. 2. Logos • This means persuasion by the use of reasoning. In other words, you must use logic and good reasoning skills to persuade your reader that your position is the best. This is the proof to support your claim (thesis). • This is the most important method of persuasion, and one that you will use in all essay writing, no matter which genre. • For example, in a paper, you would use specific details from the text along with a clear explanation why these details support your thesis.

  6. Examples of Logos • For a literary paper: direct examples of literary devices, i.e.…symbols, diction, metaphor, and quotes • For a persuasive paper: quotes, evidence from an expert, percentages, etc. • ALL EXAMPLES AND DETAILS MUST SUPPORT YOUR THESIS

  7. 3. Pathos • This means persuading by appealing to a reader’s emotions. • This type of rhetoric is only used in certain types of writing, including speeches, auto/biographical narratives, and editorials. • Pathos uses emotional or motivational appeals, storytelling, and vivid language.

  8. Example of Pathos • Storytelling: • “When I was a child, I had to walk 5 miles each way to school, often in the bitter cold.” • Political Speech: • “Joe Smoe doesn’t care about hard working people like you. In fact, he wants to take half of your hard-earned wage each month to pay for ridiculous programs that benefit very few people.”

  9. Homework • Watch a political speech. Find an example of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos and write each down. You may summarize instead of quote directly. Bring your textbooks tomorrow!
