  1. A toys story? A Digital Observatory for Protected Areas Delivering the right information With the right tools For the right people Park Managers Public Decision-makers Researchers

  2. What Providing the right information on protected areas with the right tools to the right people • to • Assess, • Monitor, • and • Forecast • Biodiversity at the Global Scale

  3. How Exchanging information on protected areas using • a set of • web based • interoperable • Critical Biodiversity Infrastructures • (databases, web services, broadcasting services, web clients)

  4. Globe4Dev Global Observatories of Biodiversity and Environment for Development PACSBio • Inst. Activities • Support to DG JRC • Support to DG ENV • Support to DG DEVCO • Support to CBD

  5. Improvements to individual web services • eStation: more global products, global detection of ecological anomalies • eMarine: more global products, global detection of ecological anomalies • eSpecies: more indicators, better link to GBIF, data versioning • GES: more focus on protected areas • eHabitat: improvement of cases of non stationarity, approval of HRI • LCC: pressure indicators to be improved, LCC to be automated, all threats to be added (poaching, pollution, mining, …) • eMGT: everything to be done (map of actors & funding, management effectiveness)

  6. 1. Assessing DOPA Explorer trilogy Globe4Dev Global Observatories of Biodiversity and Environment for Development 2. Monitoring DOPA Validator 3. Predicting & forecasting DOPA Analyst

  7. Providing the right information to the right people with the right tools The first purpose of our work is to provide to decision makers with means to assess the state of protected areas and to prioritize them according to biodiversity values and threats so as to support decision making and fund allocation processes. A second key objective is also to provide the best available data and tools to support national authorities in their reporting tasks (e.g. NBSAPs for CBD, GEF, requests to EC).

  8. Explorer (beta)

  9. Explorer (beta) • The first purpose of our work is to provide to decision makers with means to assess the state of protected areas and to prioritize them according to biodiversity values and threats so as to support decision making and fund allocation processes. • A second key objective is also to provide the best available data and tools to support national authorities in their reporting tasks (e.g. NBSAPs for CBD, GEF, requests to EC).  

  10. Explorer (beta) • DOPA Explorer is showing our “savoir faire” • 1st Target is Decision Maker • Need to • Improve indicators and streamline (with IUCN & WCMC) • Improve interface for reporting • Simplify functionalities (move monitoring components to Analyst) • Add new components on • Local actors and projects • Management Effectiveness • Direct Threats

  11. DOPA Explorer 1.0

  12. Validator(beta) • DOPA Validator is the interface to capture changes (monitoring) by ground truth validation of information available in Explorer • 1st Target is Park managers, NGOs • Need to • Validation of park boundaries • Validation of species list & collection of data on species abundance • Collection of data of actors & projects on the ground • Pressures: collection of info on LCC (Lucy’s tool), local conflicts & threats (poaching, pollution, mining, ...) • Collection of data on management effectiveness

  13. DOPA Validator (Beta)

  14. Analyst (alpha) • DOPA Analyst is the interface to predict/forecast • 1st Target is researchers, NGOs • Need to • Simulate impact of gain/loss of protected areas on indicators • Forecast climate change impact on biomes/species • Quantify loss of biodiversity (biofuel use case) • Provide raw data for ecological analyses (fire & phenology data) • Connectivity analyses

  15. DOPA Analyst (Alpha)

  16. Additional challenges • IUCN & WCMC likely to be co-owner of DOPA: practical consequences • How to orchestrate best the development of many tools • How to ensure corporate image (sharing of design, single entry points, …) • Limited computational capacity for multiple users, learning curve in using HADOOP 16
