  3. The Lion & the Mouse illustrated and written by Jerry Pinkney Click book to hear the illustrators description of book and illustrations. This is a retelling of the classic Aesop's fable of the unlikely companionship of two animals who should not live in harmony. It proves that a small act of kindness can go a long way. However, this book is almost completely wordless, the exquisite illustrations tell the tale.

  4. The House in the Night Written by Susan Swanson Illustrated by Beth Krommes This book shows how exciting a bed time story can be. It takes us from the little house to a book and then into the imagination of a story on the journey to bed time.

  5. The Invention of Hugo Cabret Written and Illustrated by Brian Selznick Click book for a view of illustrations This book is not like most of the books that win the Caldecott Medal it is 526 pages but it is not considered a novel. It tells the story of Hugo Cabret and his life being an orphan living in the walls of the train station in Paris and taking care of the clocks. It also takes you into his world of trying to secretly recreate an automaton with notes from his late father. Through his work on the automaton he must steal from a toy shop where he begins to form a relationship with the shop keeper who has secrets of his own.

  6. Randolph Caldecott This award was created in 1937 because some people were concerned that illustrators were not being recognized for their work in books. So, Frederic G. Melcher suggested the illustrations be awarded as well. They created the award and named the award after the first winner, nineteenth-century English illustrator, Randolph J. Caldecott for his "The Diverting Story of John Gilpin“. The man on the horse image that appears on the award is also based on a picture from his book. The award is given by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. Each year and award is given to a book with exceptional illustrations that enhance the story. A gold Caldecott medal to one overall winner each year and a silver medal is given to books that are runners up and the committee feels had exceptional illustrations.

  7. Criteria 1. In identifying a “distinguished American picture book for children,” defined as illustration, committee members need to consider: a. Excellence of execution in the artistic technique employed; b. Excellence of pictorial interpretation of story, theme, or concept; c. Appropriateness of style of illustration to the story, theme or concept; d. Delineation of plot, theme, characters, setting, mood or information through the pictures; e. Excellence of presentation in recognition of a child audience. 2. The only limitation to graphic form is that the form must be one which may be used in a picture book. The book must be a self-contained entity, not dependent on other media (i.e., sound, film or computer program) for its enjoyment. 3. Each book is to be considered as a picture book. The committee is to make its decision primarily on the illustration, but other components of a book are to be considered especially when they make a book less effective as a children’s picture book. Such other components might include the written text, the overall design of the book, etc. Terms 1. The Medal shall be awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published by an American publisher in the United States in English during the preceding year. There are no limitations as to the character of the picture book except that the illustrations be original work. Honor books may be named. These shall be books that are also truly distinguished. 2. The award is restricted to artists who are citizens or residents of the United States. Books published in a U.S. territory or U.S. commonwealth are eligible. 3. The committee in its deliberations is to consider only books eligible for the award, as specified in the terms. (Adopted by the ALSC Board, January 1978. Revised, Midwinter 1987.)
