  2. Our Goals • To compare and contrast the developments and drawbacks of women’s rights in Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey • Develop Understanding • Educate to Spread Awareness • Start a Movement

  3. Afghanistan • Taliban (1996-2001) • Laws for Women • Fashion • Burka • Freedom & Safety Issue

  4. More Problems • Marriage & Violence • Forced Marriages • 1 in 3 experience physical, psychological, or sexual violence • Education • Over 70% of girls don’t have access to education • 87% Illiterate

  5. Iran’s Improvement • Law against chadors February 1, 1936. • No longer required to wear full body coverings • Moving in positive direction for rights. • Current law: women only need to wear headscarf, or Hijab, in public Moving Forward Through Fashion

  6. Iran’s issues • Types of marital abuse • Marital rape, beating, biting, bondage, starvation, stoning, and imprisonment at home. • Husband’s permission needed to work • Testimony trials are only worth half of a man’s.

  7. Turkey • No Religious Government • No Islamic barriers on paper • Western Modernization influenced culture • Women’s Rights in Politics & Society • 1993: Tansu Ciller =1st female prime minister • Not required to ask husbands’ permission to work or travel • Equal pay for equal work

  8. A Major Drawback • Dishonor your family • By either: • Wearing tight clothes • Being seen with a guy that’s not your husband • Pre-marital sex • Being Raped • Any action deemed “dishonorable” Honor Killing: an ancient tradition still sometimes observed a male member of the family kills a female relative for tarnishing the family image

  9. What’s Being Done Women’s Organizations • Revolutionary Association of the Women in Afghanistan (RAWA) • Women’s Organization of Iran (WOI) • International Women of Istanbul (IWI)

  10. What Can We Do? Educate/Inform Start Groups Donate Money & Time Ask local broadcasting stations and print media to keep us informed
