  2. Paragraph 1: Character Introduction • This paragraph gives basic information about your character. Look at the Harry Potter sample essay in your packet with a partner and find the answers to these questions: Where does he live? What does he do? Who are his family members? Who are his friends? What are his hobbies? What kind of person is he? (adjectives) - NOTE – This paragraph does NOT tell the whole plot/story of the movie. It just introduces your character.

  3. Paragraph 1: TOPIC SENTENCE The topic sentence should tell your character’s name, followed by the most important information about your character. Try to guess these characters based on their topic sentences: is a scientist and superhero who turns into a large green monster whenever he gets angry. The Hulk (Bruce Banner) Maria Von Trapp is a music-loving nun who leaves her convent to look after a large family of children. is a computer hacker and programmer who finds out that he must save humanity from its enslavement to the Matrix. Neo (Thomas Anderson) is a snack shop worker from Seoul who fights to rescue his daughter from a mutant monster. Park Gang-du NOTICE: All these sentences use a relative clause with “who”….

Paragraph 1: CONCLUDING SENTENCE You may want to finish the paragraph with a concluding sentence which tells what is happening at the beginning of the story, BEFORE the life-changing experience in Paragraph 2. EXAMPLE: At the beginning of the story, however, he is living a normal, non-magical life in Privet Drive with his aunt and uncle. When the story begins, she is trying to avoid Gaston, who wants to marry her. As the movie starts, he lands on Earth and is discovered by the Kent family. In the beginning of the movie, he is preparing to inhabit his avatar on Pandora.

Paragraph 2: Life-Changing Experience • BEFORE WRITING: • Make sure you have 2-4 changes you can write about. • Choose the MOST MEANINGFUL changes. • Arrange the examples logically using “Before” and “After” transition signals. EXPERIENCE: Harry discovers he ‘s a wizard, moves to Hogwarts Which events from the outline should be linked with before/after transition signals? Which events from theoutline are NOT included in the paragraph? Why?

Paragraph 2: TOPIC SENTENCE • The topic sentence should include at least three parts: • Character’s name • The idea “life changed” • What happened to change the character’s life Harry Potter’s life changed when he discovered that he was a wizard and moved to Hogwarts. When Park Gang-du’sdaughter is taken by the Han River Monster, his life changes completely. Meeting the BeastchangesBelle’s life.

  7. Paragraph 2: BODY WITH TRANSITION SIGNALS EXPERIENCE: Harry discovers he ‘s a wizard, moves to Hogwarts Use before and after to organize the changes. Add extra information to add detail and interest readers: Before he went to Hogwarts, Harry didn’t know how his parents had died. After moving to Hogwarts, Harry found out that Voldemort killed them. Eventually, he discovered that he must defeat Voldemort himself.

  8. Paragraph 2: SUMMARIZE THE END OF THE STORY In Paragraph 3, we will talk about the character’s future. Therefore, it’s a good idea to quickly talk about the character’s life at the end of the movie in Paragraph 2. At the end of the series, Harry defeated Voldemort with the help of many other wizards. The wizarding world was at peace again. Finally, the Beast is transformed into a prince again and Belle and the Beast are married. In the end, Park Gang-du helps to kill the Han River monster. NOTICE – Use transition signals “Finally”, “At the end of the movie”, “In the end” to summarize the end.

  9. Paragraph 3: Predicting the Future • In this paragraph you will predict the future. Use the outline on p. 24 to think about your character’s future. • Give REASONS for some of your predictions: • Talk about many different parts of the character’s future: family and friends, job, living environment, and the world of the story. • Use future tense – “be going to” or “will” • Use transition signals to tell about time (first, after that, next) or to introduce a new type of example or idea (also, furthermore, in addition).

  10. Paragraph 3: TOPIC SENTENCE This topic sentence tells your OPINION about what will happen in the future, rather than facts about what happened in the movie. Therefore, you should use an OPINION SIGNAL in the topic sentence: I think, I believe, In my opinion In the future, I think Harry is going to do many exciting things. Give a GENERAL IDEA about what the character will do in the topic sentence. Don’t give details yet. Your topic sentence must introduce THE WHOLE PARAGRAPH. In the future, I think Harry is going to do many exciting things. X In the future, I think Harry is going to have many children. Use “in the future” or another future expression to let your reader know you are predicting future events. I think Belle and the Beast will have a happy life together. In my opinion, Park Gang-du’sfuture will be more successful than his past. I think Harry is going to do many exciting things in the future.

  11. WHAT IS A ROUGH DRAFT? • For next week’s homework, you will write a ROUGH DRAFT of your Midterm Movie Character Essay. • A rough draft is your first try. You will probably make some mistakes – that’s okay! • You will be graded on your effort. If you work hard and turn in your essay, you will receive full points • DO NOT use an internet translator. DO NOT plagiarize (copy from the internet or friends.) If you do these things, you will lose your points. More importantly, the teacher can not help you to fix your mistakes if you copy or use a translator. • We will peer-edit the rough drafts in class. The teacher will also take a look. Bring the rough draft to class, and do your best to help your classmates peer-edit. • In 2 weeks, you will turn in your FIRST DRAFT. The first draft will be graded on quality, with a letter grade. To get a good score on your first draft, make your best effort on your rough draft this week.
