Addressing People • Sir or Ma’am if an officer or civilian • Can always call someone by their rank • RCT - Recruit • CDT, CFC – Cadet • CPL – Corporal • SGT, SSG, SFC, MSG – Sergeant • 1SG – First Sergeant • SGM, CSM – Sergeant Major • WO – Chief, Master Chief, Mr., Ms. • WO Cadets - Mr., Ms. • 2LT, 1LT – Lieutenant • CPT – Captain MAJ - Major • LTC, COL – Colonel All Generals - General

Saluting Outdoors and In Uniform • Salute Officers when passing them or coming from behind • Salute the flag when it passes or it is being raised or lowered • Salute when ordered to report to an officer • Salute when ordered to report to an officer • Hand over heart when flag passes or is raised or lowered Indoors and In Uniform

Approaching an officer outdoors • From the front – • wait till you are about six paces away • continue walking • salute • while saying GOOD MORNING, AFTERNOON or EVENING Sir or Ma’am • Wait till officer returns salute or until you have passed to drop salute • From behind - • wait till you are about six paces away • continue walking • salute • while saying BY YOUR LEAVE Sir or Ma’am • Wait till officer returns salute or until you have passed to drop salute

  7. Reporting to an officer • Come immediately, running if necessary • Stop about 2 paces away from the officer, in front of them and centered • Salute • Say, Sir / Ma’am / Sergenat, cadet (state your rank) (state your last name) reporting as ordered • When leaving, take one step back, salute, and when the salute is returned, do an about face and leave the area
