  1. “The war is illegal” STARK – Abitur-Training Englisch

  2. Structure • Newspaper article  “The war was illegal” (The Guardian, September 17, 2004) • Cartoon  “Those illegal blood spots…” by Martin Rowson (2004) • Possible ‘Abitur’-tasks • Possible (ideal) solution  general notes & hints  carefully worded text

  3. Themes & Topics • Globalisation • Global challenges • International peace-keeping • The role of Britain & the USA • The media • Cartoon • Evaluation

  4. Task 1 – comprehension/context Sum up what arguments Kofi Annan and Tony Blair bring forth to support their view of the war‘s legality. • First sentence! (“The article…”) • Two contrasting opinions about the justifiability of the second war on Iraq • Kofi Annan: pre-emptive strike and a lawless use of force • Tony Blair: UN resolution (2002) justifies the second war on Iraq • 235 words

  5. Task 2 – analysis Analyse how the cartoon makes a mockery of Tony Blair. • “The cartoon uses T. Blair’s physical appearance, clothes, props and the setting to make mockery of the PM and his political decisions concerning the Iraq war” • The outward appearance suggests that he has gone mad • Huge eyes (alertness) & bloody hands (guilt) • The rifle alludes to illegal fox hunting  implies that the war in Iraq was illegal, too • Saddam Hussein’s head hung up as a trophy  shows the inhumanity of the manhunt

  6. Task 2 – analysis • The empty wooden panels show that Bush and Blair failed • Sandbags & barbed wire  insinuate Blair’s isolation within the UK, the EU and the UN • Blair’s exclamation (speech bubble)  T. Blair wants to take (bloody) revenge on Kofi Annan • Conclusion: “All these characteristics suggest that Tony Blair in no longer a competent and responsible Prime Minister “ • 658 words

  7. Task 3 – comment/evaluation Evaluate to what extent the cartoon is suitable to illustrate the article’s contents. • Same main message: “The war was illegal” • The headline of the article & the caption of the cartoon show illegality • Text structure and visual elements stress T. Blair’s guilt • The article uses quotes & the cartoon uses fictitious exclamations to underline stubbornness

  8. Task 3 – comment/evaluation • Cartoon: humorous criticism  Article: background information • The article takes into account that the Labour Party traditionally supports the UN • The journalist argues that because of his late stand, Annan must take some of the blame • 335 words

  9. Own Opinion • General hints & carefully worded text • Various vocabulary • Mixture of English & German (same font) STARK – Abitur-Training Englisch ISBN: 978-3-89449-152-9
