  1. Degrees of hearing loss

  2. Determining the Hearing Loss • Normal HL :-10 to 20 dB • Mild HL :-20 to 40 dB • Moderate HL :-41 to 55 dB • Moderately Severe HL :-56 to 70 dB • Severe HL :-71 to 90 dB • Profound HL :-91 dB and above

  3. Normal Hearing Loss Students can detect all speech sounds even at a soft conversation level. The student’s hearing would be plotted in the -10 to +15 dB range on an audiogram

  4. Mild Hearing Loss Have minor problems in articulation in some cases Cannot understand the messages completely If spoken softly or in a noisy environment Students will require the use of a hearing aid or personal FM systems

  5. Moderate Hearing Loss Have problem in articulation Can hear people talk within a relatively short distance But find it difficult to listen at a low voice. Hearing aids or personal FM systems are essential

  6. Moderately sever Hearing Loss Can hear people talk only within a short distance if hearing aids are available. Rely on lip reading for communication. Have difficulties in listening to tapes and watching TV

  7. Without amplification students can miss up to 100% of speech information. Full time use of amplification is essential They will probably require additional help in all language based subjects

  8. Severe Hearing Loss[71-90 dB] Students can only hear loud noises at close distances Rely on lip reading for communication even with hearing aids Delayed in speech development

  9. Profound hearing loss For all practical purposes these students rely on vision rather then hearing for processing information Have immense difficulties in speech learning So training at an early stage is very important

  10. Feel their pain. You can serve them the best
