  1. Can biofuel production be environmentally friendly? Szilvia LUDA (PhD. Student) With collaboration of Ricardo Scacchetti and Giovanni Conti Corvinus University of Budapest Department of Environmental Economics and Technology szilvia.luda@uni-corvinus.hu

  3. Main reasons for energetic use of biomass (PROS) www.uni-corvinus.hu/gkar

  4. We invite you to evaluate the biofuel production in a eco-holistic way • Eco-holistic evaluation is a new idea which combines traditional holism with an eco-centric view. www.uni-corvinus.hu/gkar

  5. Is production of bio-fuels really environmentally sound? (&CONS) • In the short run only intensive (industrial) systems are economically feasible (only big farms getting subsidies 500-5000 hectares ) • Production with high industrial input, small positive energy balance, a lot of chemicals used • Mainly monocultures, reduced agro-biodiversity • GMO use is stimulated www.uni-corvinus.hu/gkar

  6. High investments in Palm Oil in Brazil T Biodiesel/hec • Deforestation • Desertification

  7. The environment sustainability depends on the production features. • Competition with food • Biomass is a carbonneutral energy resource • Biomass is renewable • Employment can be increased in rural areas 1st generation Local scale • Mainly monocultures • OGM • Use of chemicals, small positive energy balance • Transport • Transport Large scale 2nd generation

  8. 2nd generation biofuel it’s not feasible in large scale $/l Crude oil 70$/bbl 50$/bbl 30$/bbl

  9. The rape oil manufacture of Szedres TERMESZTÉS 5000ha Rape seed 430 MT Vegetable oil production Rape oil 150 MT Rape pellet 280 MT d=60km • -Animal feeding • -Heating • Public building • Office, other building, • Shop • - Esterification • Bio-diesel • - Direct fuels • Machinery used in agriculture • - Vegetable oil for food www.uni-corvinus.hu/gkar 9

  10. Is it possible to create and actually operate a sustainable social-economical-ecological systems or not? Ecoflex model With the help of the okoflex model we try to frame the rape oil manufacture of Szedres into the triad of economy, society and environment. Ecoflex is a type of eco-agricultural model. The model’s originality is that it integrates the rape oil pressing manufacture into the ambient agricultural structure. The stock can be produced in a 50-60km zone. (Minimizing transport distances, reduces environmental charges and also reduces transport costs.) www.uni-corvinus.hu/gkar
