  1. Middle English 1150-1500 • Between 450 and 1200 the English language was developed using a combination of: • Latin • Danish • Old Norse • Norman French • After the Norman Conquest in 1066, England’s new aristocracy spoke French.

  2. Middle English 1150-1500 • Well educated people needed to know 3 languages: • French for dealing with nobility • Latin for church, business, education • English for communication with commoners • French had a strong influence on English

Middle English 1150-1500 • French was introduced into what was becoming Middle English • Many Old English words were dropped • French increased the English vocabulary by 10,000 words – 7,500 of those are still in use today. • Today, almost half of Modern English’s vocab comes from Latin and French

Middle English 1150-1500 • French influence also led to the gradual simplification of English grammar and spelling. • There was still linguistic diversity and often times people in one part of England could not understand people that lived in another part. • Over time, the dialect spoken in London became the standard.

  5. Characterization • The methods a writer uses to reveal the values and personalities of characters. • Can be made through explicit statements about a character or indirectly through well-chosen words, thoughts, and actions.

Techniques of Satire(All satire will fit in to one or more of these categories) • Exaggeration To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. • Incongruity To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings.

  8. Reversal To present the opposite of the normal order (e.g., the order of events, hierarchical order). • Parody To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing.

  9. Cartoon Activity • Examine each cartoon and on your own paper answer the following questions: 1. What purpose (or purposes) are being used in the cartoon? Explain! 2. What technique (or techniques) are being used in the cartoon? Explain! 3. What issue or topic do you think is being satirized in the cartoon? Explain! 4. In your opinion, is the cartoon successful in communicating the point it was trying to make? Why or why not?

  10. Article assignment • You will chose a “theme” and receive an article. THEMES: Politics Entertainment Sports • Once you read the article, you will individually answer questions #1-5 as fully and completely as you can. Every student is expected to complete and turn in the questions. • When the questions are answered, you will partner with the another student who has read the same article as you. You will share your answers to the questions with your partner and you will prepare a brief presentation for the class. Your presentation must cover the information in the questions that were answered both individually and what you came up with together.
