Standardized assessments • Fair? • Most do not take into account external factors that put some children at a disadvantage • Number of parents living in the home, parents’ educational background, type of community, and poverty rate main variables in achievement gap • Cookie- cutter curriculums that leaves little time for higher learning or creative innovation

  4. Value of Education • Department of Education • 2010 budget: $46.7 billion • $38.3 billion to elementary and secondary schools • $3.6 billion to postsecondary schools

  5. Poverty • Disparaging factors in impoverished areas: • Parents not able to contribute • Poor neighborhood schools doubling as training grounds for new inexperienced teachers • Numbers: • 87% non- Black children in poor neighborhoods will graduate high school, compared to 95% who live in affluent neighborhoods • 76% Black children in poor areas of country will graduate high school, compared to 96% who live in affluent neighborhoods

  6. Solution? • New educational system that acknowledges external adversities of students • Introduces different ways of learning to cater to each child • Mentor program to promote healthy relationships that can reach outside boundaries
