  3. Mental Math • Count up and down by 3’s between 3 and 36. • 4 x 75 279 + 350 • 250 - 199 $15 + $7.75 • Double $1.50 800/40 • 4 x 12, ÷ 6, x 8, - 4, ÷ 6, x 3, ÷ 2

  4. Notes • Shape: write the fractions with common denominators • Operate: add the renamed fractions and add the whole numbers • Simplify: reduce the fraction

  5. Example #1 Add: 2 1/2 + 1 1/6 Step 1: Shape: write the fraction with common denominators. 2 1/2 = 2 n/6 = 2 3/6 + 1 1/6 = + 1 n/6 = + 1 1/6 Step 2: Operate: add the renamed fractions. 2 3/6 + 1 1/6 3 4/6 Step 3: Simplify: convert the improper fraction to a mixed number 3 4/6 = 3 2/3 Next
