  6. Short Summary : This play is about the Ekdal's family . This family consist of Hialmar the father , Gina the mother and Hedvig the daughter . They were a happy family until, GregersWerle appears in their life and change it up side down .Gregers tells the family many tragic facts , leads to the distraction of the family . He claimed that he calls for the ideal life . His idealism leads Hedvig to kill herself at the end of the play .

  7. Major Characters : GregersWerle: The impassioned, idealistic son of HakonWerle. He has returned from self-imposed exile to avenge his father's crimes against the Ekdal family.

  8. HialmarEkdal: Hialmar's handsomeness, sympathetic voice, and talent for declaiming the verses and thoughts of others have always made him appear the "great light of the future" among his intimates .

  9. Hedvig Ekdal  :  The Ekdals' fourteen-year-old daughter. She is the play's most pathetic figure: its innocent and victimized child. She is of uncertain parentage, belonging either to Hialmar or Werle.

  10. Gina Ekdal : Ekdal's wife and the former house servant of the Werles. By far the most practical members of the family .

  11. HakonWerle :  A wealthy industrialist who is responsible for the ruin of his former partner, Old Ekdal, and his family.

  12. Old Ekdal : The victim of Werle's betrayal, he suffered public disgrace years ago. He is a .socially tabooed figure

  13. Relling : Hialmar's longtime antagonist .The cynical Dr. Relling works and his rival over the fate of Hialmar. Clearly appearing as a figure of knowledge of truth and honesty.

  14. Themes : *The contrast between realism and idealism *Light Vs. darkness

  15. Who is the Wild Duck : It is quite difficult to say which character actually represents this bird because the hints the author provides can be applied to several characters.

  16. HialmarEkdal Hedvig Old Ekdal Ibsen’s own life

  17. Famous Quotations : In Act III, Gregers says: “The wild duck is the most important of all the things in there”. No doubt that the wild duck is the most important symbol in the play which makes the play one of the great plays of Ibsen.

  18. Other Literary Aspects: Foreshadowing : Many events in the play foreshadow what follows them: *The mess Gregers makes of his room while building a stove fire . * when Hjalmar emerges from the garret with a doubled-barreled pistol and warns Hedvig not to touch it because it still has a bullet  .

  19. Irony : In The Wild Duck, HjalmarEkdal is unconscious of the fact that despite his image as a loving husband and father, he is not the real father of Hedveg .

  20. The last scene in the play
