Example Clausessignal words / verb in clause • The postman, whodelivers our mail, is very reliable. • Barbara, for whom I am house sitting, will be spending a month in California. • While walking down my street, I stopped to talk to Carl, whose mother is sick. • The bank account whichwas opened for me at age seven, now has $7000! • The car that I stole from my brother broke down five miles out of town.

  4. Notice that in each sentence there is a main verb for the sentence and a different verb within the clause. The verb is the heart of a clause…a clause cannot exist without its own verb.
