  3. What is school violence? • Physical • Verbal • Sexual

  4. Examples of physical violence: • Play fighting • Physical vandalism of school property • Fighting • Bringing weapons to school • Real physical violence

  5. Examples of verbal violence: • Personal putdowns • Racial/Ethnic slurs • Religious slurs • Sexual Orientation • Confrontational language

  6. Examples of Sexual Abuse: • Inappropriate sexual comments • Sexual harassment • Sexual Attack • Rape • Graph to the left shows the percentage of reported sexual attacks against students on school campuses nationwide in the year 2001*

  7. How does the media contribute to school violence? • Newspapers and news shows depict violence on a daily basis. • Students are overloaded with violent images of GUNS WAR DEATH FIGTHING DESTRUCTION

  10. Magazines and Music Videos • Market aggressive persona towards teens • Depict role models in aggressive, antagonistic light • Glorify ‘street life’ and violence as ‘keepin’ it real’

  11. Movies and TV Shows • Most teen movies contain gratuitous violence of some form • Glamorize guns and other weapons • Make violence seem commonplace

  12. Impact? • Students become desensitized to violence • View violence as a means to resolve conflicts • Lose respect for property and human life • See violent behavior as something to be emulated

  13. Impact • In 1996 270,000 students brought a gun to school ** • In 1999, 82% of homicide victims 15 to 19 years old were killed with firearms* • In 2000, more than 400,000 youth ages 10-19 were injured as a result of violence*

How can educators promote and support a positive change? • Preventing School Violence: Policies for Safety, Caring, and Achievement * • Pay attention to the signs* • Warning Signs For Parents* • Mediate your classroom media time • Introduce alternative solutions to violence; help students become responsible • Remember-promoting safe schools is everyone’s business!
