  17. Drugs Drugs are substances, other than food, that change the structure or function of the body or mind. Some drugs need a prescription or are available Over the Counter (OTC).

  18. Why drugs are taken? Medicines are drugs that are used to treat or prevent diseases and other conditions. Examples: Vaccines, antibiotics, aspirin, etc.

  19. Drug use Safely and Dangerously Drug use is the term for taking a drug correctly, following instructions for dose, time, etc.. Drug misuse: is using a drug, such as a prescription drug for its unintended purpose. Example would be taking ADD medication for weight loss or for “chemical” energy. Drug Abuse: Occurs when an individual needs to take more and more of a drug to achieve the benefit they received while first misusing the chemical.

  23. Terms to know Tolerance: Need for more and more of a drug to get effects. Synergism- Multiplier effect; taking of two or more drugs to get greater effect. Antagonistic- taking of two or more drugs to reduce or cancel out the effects of the drugs. Side effects- reaction to a drug that is other than person intended. Withdrawal: The bodies response to the addicted person not using the drug; includes headaches, dizziness, vomiting, flu symptoms, and delirium tremors.

  45. Drug Classifications Stimulants: Chemicals that increase the functioning of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Depressant: Chemicals that slow down the functioning of the CNS. Hallucinogens: Substances both synthetic and organic that alter the perceptions, moods, behavior, and reality of the user. Narcotics: Compounds that dull the sense of pain and/or induce sleep. Inhalants: Ingredients found in household items, glue, paints, gas, that when introduced in the body cause impairment of body functions. Designer Drugs:Chemicals or other substances that are used to mimic (copycat) the effects of other drugs.
