  6. FOOD MallomarsThey were marshmallows covered in chocolate and filled with raspberry jam on a cookie. Cherry Candy CigarettesYour typical candy cigarette, but instead of the bland chalky taste, they instead had a fantastic cherry flavor.   Magic Shell Ice Cream CoatingChocolate syrup intended for sundaes that was supposed to turn into a hard shell after a few moments on the cold ice cream. Sticklets GumA gimmick gum that came out sometime around '88. Its big sales pitch was that of economy. Wherein a typical (at that time) Wrigley's pack carried 7 sticks, The Sticklets pack carried nine slender sticks. Both packs were the same size, yet the Sticklets packs had the gum "cut" parallel to the shorter side of the pack so as to make 9 sticks instead of 7.     Crunch n' MunchIt's somewhat like caramel corn but better, it has more of a butter flavored caramel with peanuts. You can still find it in stores today.

ART & CULTURE • "Les Miserables" dominates Broadway's Tony Awards, taking eight prizes, including best musical. • Joseph Lash published “Helen and Teacher,” the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. • Vanessa Williams was the first black Miss America but her reign was short due to the revelation of a set of “Penthouse” photos“ • The controversial movie "The Last Temptation of Christ," directed by Martin Scorsese, opened in nine cities despite objections by some Christians who felt the film was sacrilegious • The Broadway musical “42nd Street” opened. Producer David Merrick stunned both cast and audience during the curtain call by announcing that the show’s director, Gower Champion, had died earlier that day. • Philip Guston (b.1913), painter, died. He was recognized as a lesser master of the first generation New York School of abstraction. He quit painting in 1967 and confined himself to drawing

  8. Olympic Memories Do you believe in miracles….YES! • 1980 Winter Olympics USA Ice Hockey Team wins Gold Medal in Lake Placid. The “Miracle on Ice” as the Americans upset the heavily favored Russians and beat Finland for gold. • 1980 Summer Olympics Moscow - USA boycotts because of the invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet forces in 1979. It leads to withdraws from many other countries – 80 nations compete – lowest since 1956.

Controversies • 1988 Summer Olympics – Seoul, South Korea – USA Track star Ben Johnson caught using steroids after winning the 100m dash. • 1989 – Pete Rose, all time hits leader in the history of the sport, is banned from baseball for betting on games. He has yet to be reinstated, as it is a hot topic currently in the world of sports.

  10. Local History 1980 – Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series in 6 games vs. Kansas City Royals. 1983 – Philadelphia 76ers win Basketball World Championship in an amazing 4 game sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers

  12. And More Video Games!!! • Atari 2600 Video Game Console. The first of it’s kind, Atari 2600 brought the arcade experience into our living rooms. Released in October 1977 but didn’t take off until Space Invaders 1980 • Most famous games….Pong and Space Invaders www.apn.gr/gameszone.htm

  13. What else was there to play? • 1980 Rubik’s Cube. First Sales in Hungary, 1979. Exported to US in 1980. • 1983 – Cabbage Patch Dolls • 1982 Trivial Pursuit. Invented by 2 Canadians on 12/15/79 – Scott Abbott & Chris Haney – who were arguing over who was a better game player. First shown in US at the Int’l Toy Fair in NYC 1982.

  17. Music • Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” sells 20 million copies making it the largest selling album ever • “We Are The World” is recorded by artists in the USA for Africa • Milli Vanilli wins Grammy for Best New Artist

  18. Compact discs are born Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” tops the charts spawning a generation of Madonna “wannabes” REO Speedwagon gave us two of the most memorable song of the decade: Keep On Loving You and Take It On the Run.

  19. Most Memorable Movies Arnold Schwarzenegger becomes a star as an action hero in James Cameron’s The Terminator I’ll Be Back.

  26. Gone But Not Forgotten • 1980 John Lennon assassinated by Mark David Chapman • 1982 March 5th. John Belushi dies from overdose of cocaine and heroin • 1983 February 4th. Karen Carpenter at age 32 from anorexia nervosa • 1985 Karen Ann Quinlan, coma patient, becomes 1st person to die in the “right to die” controversy debate 1975-76 (Dies from pneumonia in 1985)

  27. 1986 November 18th. Supermodel Gia Carangi is the 1st woman to die of the AIDS virus in the U.S. 1988 December 21st. Pan Am 103 crashes over Lockerbie, Scotland; Libyan terrorists suspected 1989 April 4th. Comedian Lucille Ball dies.
