Building Research Opportunities • Build working relationships with your academic/ research community • Research placement/ recovery position? • Success lies in motivation! • Create your own IRB and Application Process • Adding a link to this on your website • Networking with your transplant physicians • Options for-profit/ non-profit • Keep lists, numbers, criteria current and readily accessible • Work close with your Medical Examiner / Coroner

Current Research Projects • Heart’s (from 1 researcher) • construction of cardiac atlas, application to create pt specific models to provide insight into ventricular arrhythmias, atrial fib, and CHF • Study of Kawasaki Disease ( specifically, coronary artery dilation) • Our pediatric hearts were the control for this study • Mechanics of Aortic Valve Calcification • Creation of bio-engineered gel for regeneration of myocardial cells

Current Research Projects • Lungs, study the genes that are the signal pathway in pulmonary hypertension • Looks at the Notch 3 and Hef-5 gene that are turned on in pulmonary hypertension disease process • Goal is to design inhibitors for this gene w/ collaboration from local bio-tech company • Again, our lungs are the control
