Devastating 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Qinghai, China on April 13, 2010

On April 13, 2010, a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Qinghai province in China at 7:49 a.m. local time. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 20.5 miles, although some reports suggested it hit only 6 miles below the surface. The quake caused significant destruction, with approximately 2,000 reported fatalities. Communication systems in the affected areas were severely compromised, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties.   2. The Qinghai province of China, near Tibet, experienced a 7.1 magnitude earthquake at 7:49 a.m. on Wednesday morning, notes the China Earthquake Network according to the theHouston Chronicle.

  3. There have been about 2,000 deaths reported due to the earthquake, the communications system in the area of the quake is compromised; thus a full death tally is still impossible to determine.

  4. The earthquake hit at a depth of 20.5 miles, some media sources are saying the quake hit at only 6 miles below the surface of the earth.
