  2. Working Toward All Rights for All: Developing Equality How did I work towards all rights for all through my internship with the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC)?

  3. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) “Our mission is advancing human rights for everyone, everywhere to end discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.”

  4. How does IGLHRC advance the human rights of everyone everywhere? • Scale and Scope • Cultural Specificity and Local Efforts • Programs: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa • Education • Activist Institutes • Example: LAC—Countering Religious Homofobia • Emergency Response • Advocacy • United Nations Work • Full consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

  7. Why Development Matters How important is the behind-the-scenes work in the overall efforts of nonprofit organizations?

Without Grants and Donations, Non-Profits Could Not Function • According to IGLHRC’s 2007-2008 Annual Report, here is the breakdown of the year’s income: • Foundation Grants: 71.90% • Donations: 12.73% • Events: 11.89% • Other: 3.49% • Reminder of my main tasks: • Grant proposals and reports (drafting and editing) • Donor acknowledgement and donation management • Major donor and foundation research • Event planning and sponsorship recruitment

My Expectations and What I Learned Before After • Development is boring • Being behind the scenes means being out of the loop • Development isn’t as important as programming • Development makes it all possible! • I found a niche in the non-profit world where I am happy and successful • This is the field for me • Overcoming challenges
