  1. “My Bondage and My Freedom” Review

  2. Following up on the final thought question from the reading guide, we will be doing a bit of creative writing. • Write a review for Frederick Douglass’ book. Choose whether this review would appear in a North or South publication

  3. RAFT Writing - R(ole)- • You are a writer for a magazine or newspaper tasked with writing a review for Frederick Douglass’ new story, “My Bondage and My Freedom.” Choose whether you’d be a writer in the South or North to help choose the angle of the review (Remember, you’re pretending for the sake of this assignment, this doesn’t need to be your actual view).

  4. A(udience)- the readers of your paper or magazine (blogs, twitter, etc. wouldn’t be around yet). Decide if your readership (the people who read your reviews) is from the North/South and Pro-/Anti-Slavery. This will help shape the content of the review.

  5. F(ormat) • a book review in a newspaper or magazine.

  6. T(opic) • Reviewing Frederick Douglass’ story, “My Bondage and My Freedom” (page 240).

  7. Things to include: • Make reference to which part of the country you are in. • Would you recommend this book to your readers? • What are the interesting points of the story? • Include quotations and examples from the excerpt we read in class and comment on the author’s style. • Should be at least a page in length (in “normal-sized” handwriting)

  8. Sample Review • “Unlike a Call of Duty or Battlefield game, Titanfall is purely focused on its excellent 6v6 multiplayer. It cannot be played alone, except for the optional (but helpful) tutorial, or via system link – you’re completely dependent on a connection to Microsoft’s dedicated servers. There’s a laudable attempt to infuse a two-sided campaign into the multiplayer through a fixed set and order of nine of the 15 maps, in which NPC faction commanders give context to the goals and game modes of each battleground. Having played through it on both sides, though, I couldn’t tell you what it’s about, other than that the IMC and Militia factions are at war. Trying to stay alive in a brawl with human-controlled bad guys is too distracting, and without controllable lulls in the fighting, most of the story is reduced to background noise.” • Excerpt from “Titanfall” review, written by Ryan McCaffreyfor ign.com. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/03/10/titanfall-review-2

  9. Sample Review • “Given the toll the polar vortex has been exacting on the continental U.S. lately, I think plenty of people can relate to the frigid predicament of the people living in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle. Disney’s Frozen is an animated adventure loosely based on “The Snow Queen,” a classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale first published in 1845…To its credit, Frozen puts a novel spin on the hackneyed nursery rhyme plotline which has the prince arriving in the nick of time to save the damsel-in-distress. A touching tale of sisterhood with a priceless message about blood being thicker than an ill-advised crush.” • Excerpt from Frozen review, written by Kam Williams for Baret News Wire.
