Mrs. Andrade • This is my 15th year with the district, the 9th year of teaching at Southeast! • I graduated from CMSU with my Bachelor and a Masters degree from Rockhurst University. • I have a wonderful husband and we are enjoying life with our spunky one year old daughter.
Daily Routine • Attendance, Pledge, Morning Work, Morning Meeting • Reader’s Workshop • Math Workshop 11:10-11:45 Recess/Lunch • Writer’s Workshop • Working with Words 1:25-1:45 2nd Recess • Social Sciences • Stack and Pack 2:30-3:20 Specials
Readers Workshop • Structure: • Mini-Lesson • Independent/Partner Reading/Book Club • Rotations: Guided Reading with Mrs. Andrade • Book Club Time • RAZ Kids • Activity Based on Needed Reading Skills/Strategy • Reflection Time Why Reader’s Workshop? Students are allowed to progress at their own reading level and receiving more time to implement the learning topic- motivation is high because books are self-selected.
Writers Workshop • Structure: • Mini-Lesson • Independent Writing “Composing Time” • Reflection Time Why Writer’s Workshop? Students advance at their own pace- because they choose their writing topic, motivation is intense and, in turn, immense growth is made.
Envision Math Workshop • Structure: • Mini-Lesson: Learning Bridge (You, We, I) • Video (Introduces daily math skill) • Rotations • Teacher Time: remediate, practice, extend • Independent Workmat: Reinforce topic/skill • Workmat may not be completed in its entirety • Activity: Practice current and previously taught skills • XtraMath • Reflection Time Why Math Workshop? Allows for all students to work at their level and receive instruction tailored to their needs.
Words Their Way • Curriculum used is Words Their Way • Grade Level Assessment • Group Students Based on Phonemic Stage • Go to Different Classes based on Stage each day for 20 minutes (do lessons/ activities) • Unit Assessment (not weekly) • Students reassessed quarterly & moved accordingly • Practice weekly word sorts at home • A word sort will be sent home on Mondays
Science and Social Studies • Science and Social Studies occur on a rotating basis • Both are taught in units defined by the Common Core Reporting Topics • Science inquiry and experiments allow students to actively engage in the topic • Unlike Reading, Writing, and Math: Science and Social Studies topics are taught and “closed”- their assessment period finishes each quarter
Technology • S.T.A.R. Reading and S.T.A.R. Math • RAZ Kids • XtraMath • Variety of Publishing Sites
Reports and Assessments • Reporting Topics are defined areas taught. Ongoing assessments will be conducted to acknowledge student growth and progress throughout the quarter. E- Exceeded M- Mastered P- Partially Understood N- Needed Support See handouts
Homework/Take Home Folders • Take Home Folder Organization tool for home-school communication • Please review daily- look for papers/forms to be returned to school • Homework: • Each student is responsible for reading 15-20 each night. • 40 book challenge • Plan, Do, Study, Act • More Information will be coming home soon • Practicing their weekly Word Sorts • Practice skills focused on during the week (identified in newsletter) ex: Leader in Me, reviews, family reading time Homework will be sent home when it is meaningful and serves a purpose.

Field Trip • One per school year • Our Field Trip is April 18 • Shawnee Mission East High School Animal Lab • Parents are welcome to attend, however due to bus capacity: parents will need to carpool or drive themselves.
Classroom Management • Southeast is a LEADER IN ME School. • Leader in Me: Daily/Quarterly acknowledgement for using the Seven Habits throughout the day. • Leadership Bingo • Class Cash
Birthdays • Birthday treats are absolutely welcome, but please make sure the treats are PRE-PACKAGED. • Please check for allergies!
Before You Go… • Sign your child’s Student Conduct Sheet and leave it on their desk. • Sign up for if haven’t already for Parent Teacher Conferences. • Consider signing up for PTA. Thank you!
