  2. Aim • Study large sample of Veterans to identify prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and pain. • Relevance • First study to represent large, national sample over multiyear time frame.

  3. Method • Studied 613,391 Operation Iraqi Freedom/ Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OIF/OEF/OND) Veterans who received care from Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities from 2009 to 2011. • Identified subset diagnosed with TBI, PTSD, and/or pain (head, neck, or back) as determined by their International Classification of Diseases-9th Revision-Clinical Modification codes.

  4. Results • TBI: 9.6% • PTSD: 29.3% • Pain: 40.2% • Full polytrauma triad expression (TBI, PTSD, and pain): 6.0%

  5. Conclusion • Increasing numbers of OIF/OEF/OND Veterans accessed VHA care over 3-year period. • Absolute number of Veterans increased by >40% from 2009 to 2011 • But proportion of Veterans diagnosed with TBI and high rates of comorbid PTSD and pain remained relatively stable.
