  4. Data Inventory and Assessment Working Group June 2007 Report Last Working Group meeting was held on 5/31/07. Activities included: • Consolidation of 14 Core Data Themes: • Administrative & Political Boundaries • Base Map Imagery (Ortho, Oblique, and Scanned Imagery) • Cadastral Information • Census and Demographics • Critical Infrastructure • Elevation and Bathymetry • Geodetic Control • Geographic Names and Places • Hydrography • Land Use and Land Cover • Transportation • Identification of industry experts and those most knowledgeable with the subject or data theme areas. • Establishment of Data Theme Subcommittees CT Geospatial Information Systems Council

  7. DEMHS GIS ProjectStatus GeoLab at State EOC Policies and Procedures are being finalized. Will be requesting identification of GIS professionals from commissioners for participation. Database is being constructed & State Data Collection ongoing and ETL processes being developed for datasets. Portal applications are in development Developing scope for self service municipal update interface for data collection and updating. CT Geospatial Information Systems Council

Strategic and Business Planning Project Status • Strategy Update • Three Informational Gathering Workshops have been held to date • Themes for the Strategic Goal: • Organize stakeholder efforts • Deliver accurate and up-to-date data • Communicate with stakeholders & decision makers • Six Programmatic Goals Have been Identified • Organizational – Create State GIS Coordination Unit • Funding – Tie Funding Requests to State Initiatives as appropriate • Data – Build/Update Core Framework Layers • Infrastructure – Build upon HLS Project & Other Departmental Initiatives (DEP, DOT, DPS, DPH, etc) • Champion – Key to sustainability • Communication and Marketing – Build Awareness, Inventory and Promote Current Uses, “Lobby” for Support CT Geospatial Information Systems Council

  9. What is/are the Strategic goals of the plan? Many agencies have made large investments in GIS. How can CT GIS be sustained? How can CT GIS be more effective? Emerging themes: • Organize GIS efforts across the State and Local Government agencies • Improve coordinationand avoid redundant efforts • Help set prioritiesto target funding initiatives • Provide geospatial guidance, share technology and expertise • Develop a data sharing framework • Creating data creation is expensive, Sharingdata is very cost-effective • Cooperative partnerships increase quantity, quality and effectiveness of data available • Delivera core set of data layers • Infrastructure to share across state agencies and local municipalities • Communicate, educate and market the benefits of GIS • Increased awarenesswill increase use, maximize benefits and lead to more support • Relate GIS funding requests to specific statewide initiatives • Identify and build relationships with multiple champions CT Geospatial Information Systems Council

Programmatic GoalsWhat is the consensus so far? 1.Organizational Issues: Coordination of GIS Create a sustainable and focused GIS Organization within DOIT 2.Funding Issues: Budget Requirements Create a Sustainable Funding Source 3.Recruiting a GIS Champion We need to do a better job enlisting and educating GIS Champions CT Geospatial Information Systems Council
