Examining Sources • Fact – statements that can be proven (proof) • Clues - Observations, written records, fossils, etc. • Reasoned Judgment – based on fact but has not been proven • Clues - Probably, reasonably, possibly, perhaps, etc. • Opinion – statement of personal preference • Clues - Think, feel, etc.
Examining SourcesTry It! I think the Moai of Easter Island are exciting artifacts. They are certain to interest people in the future. Islanders used stone picks to carve the Moai from the rock of the extinct volcano RanoRaruku. Both inside and outside of the crater, archaeologists have found many unfinished statues and thousands of stone picks. All the maoi are made of a yellow-grey stone called tuff. The tuff comes from the crater walls of RanoRaruku. The people who built the statues probably used log levers to lift the statues onto their platforms. Trees grow on the island today. By studying pollen deposits, scientists have learned that there were trees on the island in the past. Also, people in other places and times have used logs as levers to lift stones.
