3. Spring 2012 • Verify that student’s course selection is on track with intended diploma type. (core 40, Academic Honors Diploma) • Also in line with career and college goals • Identify Top College Selections • Take the SAT (May or June) or ACT test in June • ACT once • SAT 2-3 times • Register with NCAA Clearing House if student plans to play Division I or II sports in college.

5. Comparison of SAT & ACT • SAT is a predicator of future academic potential. • ACT is a tool to measure knowledge. • Most 4 year colleges require one as a part of application process. • May take more than once. Many schools take best of scores. Check your individual school to confirm this.

8. Naviance = Tool for Students & Parentsto explore colleges, compare choices and obtain data on schools of interest. Parents Students • Students were introduced to web based program in October. • You will be writing a Resume in Junior English Class. • A survey of personality and interests needs to be completed on Naviance by August 15, 2012 • Students be active and do your own research, • Naviance has a survey for parents to complete about their student (old brag sheet) • Log in with password provided by Mrs. Quiet tonight. • Please complete before school resumes in August. • Be open and have discussions about financial resources.

9. College Options • Universities -4 year degree, grad and MD/ Phd programs. Colleges within the University • Colleges - 2 associates and 4 year bachelor degrees Liberal Arts, Colleges of Engineering or Health Sciences • Community Colleges- more affordable tuition, • specific training in industry or career skills.

10. College Options CONTINUED • Public Colleges/Universities • Admission requirements are more rigid with regard to GPA’s and test scores. Specific Admission & Scholarship Criteria • Private Colleges/Universities • Admission Officers use a holistic approach with regard to scores, grades and extracurricular activities. More flexible in general.

Community Colleges • Ivy Tech • Affordable options –low tuition • Specific Training for specific employment • culinary, nursing, dental hygiene, medical records. • Courses do transfer to major state colleges or universities for credit. When registering courses that transfer are identified as to where they are accepted. • Pathway to IU, Purdue and Ball State if a part of the requirements have not yet been met. (GPA, Scores)

College Visits • Plan to visit colleges during Spring Break or Summer. • Call Admissions Office to schedule a time for a campus tour, observe a class, meet with students and faculty as well as admissions staff. • Take notes on each visit. • Marian School Policy regarding College Visits- Handbook • Notify attendance, bring signed document from admissions.

Dream School • List 3-5 colleges you will be applying to in the Fall of your Senior year. • Plan out the Application Dates, Required Documents, application types, reference letters required, essays and fees.

27. Essay: Who are you and who do you want to become. Jeff Brenzel, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, Yale. • Your opportunity tell the admissions officer about who you really are. • Getting started: Is there something else about me that there wasn’t a blank for? • Brainstorm Personality Traits or Strengths • Let the Draft Flow • Develop 3 parts to the essay • Introduction: 1 paragraph • Body: several paragraphs explaining main idea • Conclusion: 1 paragraph • Find a creative angle • Be Honest Don’t write what you think Admission Officers want to hear. • Show the essay to parent, friend, teacher. Does this represent who I am? • Make sure the letter is your voice and not that of another…..(Mom?) • Proof and have someone edit your essay for mechanics of a great essay. • * Work on essay Drafts during the summer.

28. Teacher References • Chose 1-2 teachers that can talk of your taking on challenges in their classes. • Make request of teacher personally before the end of this school year. • Teachers will need students to have a survey and resume completed and submitted on Naviance before they are able to complete the reference letter.

Additional Tasks • Summer of 2012: • If you are not working, find other opportunities for personal growth or academic enrichment. • Check colleges of interest and learn about their summer enrichment programs. • Finalize plans. Be ready to send out college applications in August. • Continue updating your Resume • Have plan of when applications will be submitted formalized.
