  1. Tennessee Politics Notes • Learning Goal:We will learn how Tennessee's congressional districts can change. If you haven’t turned in your Culture Booklet, I recommend you do so soon. 10 points are taken off each day late. Bellwork for 10/21 How can population (literally the number of people) affect politics?

Definitions • Statutory requirements- requirements identified and defined by the law. • Population shifts-a change in the numbers making up a population • Political power shifts-a change of which political party holds the majority of the votes. • Representative Democracy-a system of governance by chosen representatives,usuallyelected from among a large group

  3. Facts about Congressional Districts • Redrawn every 10 years, after the Census. • Districts represent the same number of people. • Political party with the power draws the lines. • Tennessee has 9 districts and Hamblen County is in District 1.

  4. So Who is in Power? • U.S. Senators-Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker • U.S. Representative for District 1-Phil Roe • Governor-Bill Haslam
