  1. The Edubuntu Linux

  2. Open Source A program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community Sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations

  3. Distribution Terms of Open Source Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria Free Redistribution Source Code Derived Works No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor License Must Not Be Specific to a Product License Must Not Restrict Other Software License Must Be Technology-Neutral

  4. Some Successful Projects Sendmail - a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) used for routing and delivery of e-mail Apache Web server - a public-domain web server developed by a loosely knit group of programmers GNOME - acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment. GNOME is a Windows-like desktop system that works on UNIX and UNIX-like systems and is not dependent on any one window manager Linux - a freely distributable open source operating system that runs on a number of hardware platforms

  5. What is Linux? Originally developed by Linus Torvalds A clone of the famous UNIX operating system An open-source operating system written and distributed under the GNU General Public License or GPL which means that its source code is freely-distributed and available to the general public Designed for a wide range of computer hardware configurations because of its speed and stability

  6. History of Linux The operating system took 30 years to evolve into what it is today. Here are some key events that led to its development 1985 - Richard Stallman publishes his famous "GNU Manifesto", one of the first documents of the open-source revolution • 1987 - Professor Andrew S. Tanenbaum invents Minix, an open-source operating system that's a clone of Unix. Young Linus Torvalds, is a computer science student in Finland that time

  7. History of Linux 1991 -- In August, Linus Torvalds announces his plans to create a free operating system on the Minix users newsgroup and in October, Linux 0.01 is released on the Internet under a GNU public license • 1999 -- In August, Red Hat the first Linux-oriented company to successfully go public

  8. Pronunciation of Linux It's really "Lee-Nooks" If you lived in Finland, you would say " Lee-nooks, "because Linus is pronounced" Lee-noose Since the English pronunciation of Linus is Line-iss Many call it Line-icks More common is Lynn-icks, which splits the difference No matter how you say it, Linux has become very popular

  9. Linux Logo: Tux the penguin Why Penguin? Linus was bitten by a killer penguin in Australia and has felt a special affinity for the species ever since There is a ‘real’ Tux - a black-footed penguin resident at the Bristol Zoo Larry Ewing designed the official Tux logo

  10. Linux Today…after a Decade One of the fastest growing operating systems in the history Continuously increasing band of developers spread throughout the world to improve upon the features of Linux Commercial enterprises are no longer wary of Linux More reliable during the nasty attacks of the CIH virus in 1999 and the love bug a year later Large and small businesses adopted Linux based servers and workstations as an integral part of their offices

  11. Common Uses of Linux Internet Servers File and Print Servers Application Servers Supercomputers Scientific Workstations Office Workstations

Some Linux Distributions Debian GNU/Linux is for x86, IA-64, Alpha, 680x0, Sparc, ARM, PowerPC, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, and IBM S/390 systems Lindows-- for x86 Runs Linux and Windows applications from Linspire, Inc. Mandriva-- for AMD64 & PowerPC systems. It is the merger of Mandrakesoft, Lycoris, and Conectiva (formely Mandrake) - a French software company SUSE -- for x86, AMD64, PowerPC, Sparc, & Alpha systems. A major retail Linux distribution, produced in Germany. The company is owned by Novell, Inc.

  13. Some Linux Distributions Red Hat Linux - for x86, AMD64, IA-64, Alpha, and Sparc systems. A software company founded in 1994 that specializes in distributing the open source Linux operating system Fedora Core- Linux is for x86 and AMD64 systems. It is a Red Hat sponsored and community supported open source project. Slackware Linux - Linux for x86 systems. One of the earliest Linux distributions, and is the oldest distribution still being maintained

  14. Local Linux Distributions • Lorma LINUX – Lorma Colleges’ Distribution to meet the needs of educational institutions and its students • BAYANIHAN Linux –Developed and distributed by ASTI • BUHAWI Linux –Developed by Bluepoint Development halted pending Bluepoint's decision between Fedora Core 3 and Red Hat Enterprise
