Education Objectives Combine push (bottom-up) and pull (top-down) strategies to maximize impact • Engage new generation of researchers and instructors in advanced research • Generate innovative learning material (learning modules, course syllabi, textbooks, broader curricula) and extract best of breed from existing learning material • Effective Dissemination Solutions (on-line repositories, summer schools, center-wide seminar series) • Establish Broad Educator Communities (through summer schools, WISE, conference participation) "Education Overview", Kristen Gates

  5. Learning Objects and Modules Goal: Five Fast-Track modules; one module per TRUST research thrust. Audience: Educators, industry professionals and students-- TAO has open access. Metrics: Number of modules, frequency of access, user surveys, used as course materials, structured review by Subject Mater Experts (SMEs). Timeline: Seven Fast-Track modules completed and online. Ongoing as new modules are added to the portal. Current inventory: 13 modules. Evaluation in progress. "Education Overview", Kristen Gates

CAPE Authoring Environment Prototype learning modules for:Network Security :: Computer Security :: Chemical Network Plant Security Goal: leverage existing initiatives and infrastructure to provide effective contributions to the education community Audience: TAO has open access. Target audience are educators, industry professionals and students. Metrics: Number of modules, frequency of access, user surveys, use as course materials, structured review by SMEs Timeline: Ongoing– new project modules are added to the TAO as content is generated.   7. Summer Programs… Goal: Education cuts across education levels… and becomes part of technological and social literacy. Audience: Undergraduates, grads, post-docs, junior faculty, under-represented communities and women Metrics: Student and participant evaluations, acceptance into college programs, tenure-track faculty positions, development of new course curriculum. Timeline: SUPERB end of program. WISE one, three and five years. "Education Overview", Kristen Gates

  8. Summer Immersion & Internship Goal: Broadly influence security topics in curricula across the US. Increase participation in security study and research by under-represented communities and women. Audience: Graduate students (MS and Ph.D.) program nationally advertised with selection by industry. Industry participation by Silicon Valley firms (e.g., Yahoo, Cisco, Xlinix). Metrics: Assessment and evaluation: participants, company mentors, number of new employee hires. Timeline: Student–pre and post program student evaluation and one-year out, survey industry participants and mentors, and number of new hires. "Education Overview", Kristen Gates

Workshops, Symposiums, Communities… Goal: Education appears within domains from engineering to the social sciences… central to technological and policy-making professional competency…solutions = policy options + technology options. Audience: Researchers, academics, technology professionals, social scientist, artist, law and policy professionals. Metrics: Conference and workshop attendance, learning materials, learning communities, participant evaluations and longitudinal evaluations. Timeline: Variable depending program. Industry Collaboration Goal: Broadly influence the security topic presence in curricula across the US… Solutions = policy options + technology options… Central to technological and policy-making professional competency. Audience: Computer Security Industry professionals Metrics: Participation, active on conference panels, participation in speakers series, collaborations with academic partners.
