Starting a top analysis

This document discusses key topics in the analysis of top quarks, including ttbar cross-section, systematics, and comparisons of various techniques such as counting and mass fitting. It highlights several weakly covered subjects, including the single top cross-section and the Wt channel, along with guidance on leveraging AOD formats for learning and analysis. The relevance of various top samples is also addressed, with multiple resources provided for further exploration, including links to tutorials and analysis tools crucial for researchers in high-energy physics.

  1. Starting a top analysis M. Cobal, University of Udine Bologna, 12 Feb 2007

  2. Which analysis to join • Several topics uncovered or weakly covered for CSC • Ttbar cross section • Systematics • Comparison of different techniques.(counting, mass fit etc..) • Single top cross section • Wt channel • New subjects • Top width hep-ph/9704243 (look at section V on page 10 Eur Phys Jour C15 (2000, 2001), “The top Quark”, Revised April 2000 by M. Mangano and T. Trippe • Top charge (analysis done in fast simulation) • ..

  3. Using AOD • To learn using the AOD, please follow: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/TriesteAnalysisTutorial1203 The above page is linked from the Physics Analysis Tools (PAT) main page: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/PhysicsAnalysisTools • Relevant top samples in AOD format are listed in: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/TopCSC (Ketevi Assamagan)

  4. Using Topview • To know what is Topview: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/TopView • To have the detailed contents of the ntuples https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/TopNtuple • To know the preselection applied to objects https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/TopViewPreselection (Akira Shibata)

  5. TopView ntuple availability • Akira is producing ntuples for all samples whose AOD is available • Availability is described in detail on the wiki: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/TopNtupleAvailability • Many (not all, missing W+Jets and some of the newly created samples) AOD's are available in release 11 production but CSC 12 production is still at validation stage.
