Essay Criteria • Two copies of your final draft (one with your real name and one without your real name) • Essay should be typed and double-spaced with one inch margins in Times New Roman 12 point font. • Your essay should have eight paragraphs: • I am…, I love…, I believe…, I don’t like…, I have…, I want…, I prefer…, and a conclusion
“Show Don’t Tell” • Make sure that your writing is as vivid and relatable as possible with the inclusion of • Details, details, details • Stories, stories, stories
Look out for these: • Be careful with their/there/they’re, it’s/its, you’re/your, and to/two/too. • “A lot” is two words, but avoid using a lot, very, etc. because these words can undermine your ideas. • Write out numbers less than 100, but 100 and up can be numbers. This doesn’t apply to dates. • With Mom, Dad, etc. capitalize it unless it is preceded by “my.”
“Big Grammar” Errors (10 Points Each) • Sentence Fragment – “Because my family believes in Him” • Run-On Sentence – “I have played soccer for six years and it is my favorite thing to do.” • Subject / Verb Agreement – “On the inside, we is all the same.” • Ambiguous Pronoun / Antecedent – “My brothers do not get along, but I really get along with him.”
Peer Editing and Revising • Read your essay aloud to your desk partner and actively listen to your desk partner read his or hers to you. • Pass your essay back and look over the essay of the person in front of you. Essays at the back of the row go to the front. • Complete the first column of the Peer Editing Sheet for the person in front of you. • Pass the essays sideways. Read this person’s essay carefully and complete the second column of the Peer Editing Sheet. • Get your essay back and begin looking at the suggestions and improving your work and complete the “Where I Stand Essay Checklist”
