What is it? • Latin name Urticaferox • Maori name - Ongaonga • Is covered in stinging hairs that put poison into the skin • Forms dense thickets up to 2m tall
Clinical Signs • Initial symptoms are itchiness, hives, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea • Anaphylaxis- a sudden allergic reaction that can become severe: breathing problems, tachycardia, unconsciousness, gastro intestinal issues and eventually coma and death if left untreated
Treatment • Contact a vet • Keep airways clear • WRAPT (Warmth, reassure/reassess/record, ABCs, position for comfort, transport) • Vet: Fluids, Epinephrine (adrenalin), oxygen, antibiotics for secondary infections
