  4. What is this course? • CEE 474/574 ENGINEERING PROJECT MANAGEMENT(3-0) 3 credits. Prerequisite: Senior standing or permission of instructor. Study of owner, engineer, and contractor organizational structures, project work break down structures, resource and asset allocation, computer and non-computer scheduling by Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). Students enrolling will be required to perform an engineering project with written and oral presentations. Students enrolling in CEE 574 will be held to a higher standard than those enrolling in CEE 474. This course is cross-listed with MINE 474/574.

What is Project Management? • Project Management is the discipline of organizing and managing resources (i.e. people) in such a way that the project is completed within defined scope, quality, time and cost constraints. A project is a temporary and one-time endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service, which brings about beneficial change or added value. This property of being a temporary and a one-time undertaking contrasts with processes, or operations, which are permanent or semi-permanent ongoing functional work to create the same product or service over and over again. The management of these two systems is often very different and requires varying technical skills and philosophy, hence requiring the development of project management. (Wikipedia)

How will I teach it? • This will be a real-life course with real-life problems, tools, and people • I will give you the tools to understand project management, work with a project manager or to be a project manager • This coarse will be focused on construction projects, whether your are an owner, builder or designer of those projects

  16. Project Management Plans • Depending on the project, for Federal work, it is only required when the contractor is selected based on a proposal instead of a low price bid. • What is in the plan depends upon the scope of the projects.

  17. Phase 13 PMP • Provide a comprehensive Project Management Plan (PMP) developed specifically for the entire scope of • this contract. As a minimum, the PMP should address/discuss the following: • a) Management approach used to design, demolish, construct, and phase turn-over of all housing • units within the proposed schedule • b) Explanation of the total project team management approach for both the design team and the • construction team • c) How the design team will support the Offeror during construction • d) Organizational chart showing Key Personnel and the inter-relationship of management and various • team components • e) Ability to deliver a quality product and effectively manage the designers, consultants and • subcontractors on the team • f) Ability to coordinate all work throughout the design and construction phases • g) Management of firms included within the design and construction teams, subcontractors, • suppliers and the planning of key elements of work • h) Availability and use of local versus out-of-state suppliers and subcontractors, materials and • methods for achieving scheduled turnover of housing units • i) Specific quality control procedures used (including quality control procedures to be used to limit • re-submittals, design errors, and poor coordination between the prime design firm and design • consultant) • j) Schedule development, and methods to be utilized to adhere to the schedule • k) Acquisition of environmental permits in a timely fashion • l) Safety • m) Preparation and submission of As-Built documents • n) Contract closeout

Phase 13 PM requirement • 5.7.2.1.2 Project Manager (Construction and Design) • The Project Manager shall not have any other project duties other than Project Manager and shall be a • registered engineer, architect or graduate construction or engineering manager and have at least ten (10) • years construction and/or design experience with at least one (1) year being in related work on housing • projects similar to this project.
