Enhancing Digital Heritage: The Role of Identifiers in Cultural and Scientific Digitisation

This paper discusses the significance of various identifiers for digitised cultural and scientific heritage, presented at the Seventh SEEDI Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Key identifiers like ISBN, DOI, and ISSN are explored for their unique, persistent nature and the vital role they play in increasing access, reducing duplication, and linking related resources. Recommendations emphasize the importance of using existing standardized identifiers for efficient metadata handling in digital libraries, ensuring future accessibility and management for digitised objects.

  3. Identification of digitised objects • to increase access, • to inform users, • to distinguish between similar objects, • to link same objects, • to facilitatetransfer of metadata, • for citations and references, • to link to other systems, • to reduce duplication.

  4. Distinguish between similarobjects

  5. Distinguish between similarobjects

  6. Reduce duplication

  7. One resource digitised twice

  8. Distinguish between similarobjects

  9. Identifiers – some characteristics • unique • persistent • dumb or intelligent • traditional (for printed resources) and new (for digital resources) • applied to different resources (books, articles, journals) • assigned by authorised agencies or by authors/publishers/libraries, etc.

  10. Identifiers for different resources • ISBN (International Standard Book Number) • ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) • ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) • ISMN (International Standard Music Number) • ISAN (International Standard Audiovisual Number)

  11. ISTC(International Standard Text Code) • DOI(Digital ObjectIdentifierSystem) • ISNI(International StandardNameIdentifier) • NBN (National BibliographyNumber) • ISCI (International Standard Collection Identifier)

  12. ISIL (International Standard Library Identifier) • ISPI (International Standard Party Identifier) • ISWC(International Standards Musical Work Code) • PII (Publisher Item Identifier)

  13. Possible levels ofidentification

  14. Identifiers for digitalobjects

  16. Worklevel: Pride andprejudice - ISTC Manifestationlevel: title publishedby one publisher in one mediaeditionwithusagerightsandgraphiclayout - ISBN, URN, NBN • Componentparts: • one chapter - BICI • otheridentifiers for manifestationlevelswhichmaybepartsof a book, e.g. componentpartidentifierse.g. sound, musicand video recordings - ISRC, musical works ISWC

  19. Recommendations • Omnipresentdigitisation – identification is more importantthanever • Digitisedobjects must beidentified, at as manylevels as possible (facilitates future use andmanagementofdigitallibraries) • Thealreadyexisting, standardisedidentifiersshouldbeused – no need to invent own, proprietaryidentifiers (facilitatesexchangeofmetadataandlinking to objects)

  20. Conclusion • Traditional identifiers have worked well for the last 40-50 years and have also proved their viability for digitised objects.
