Glossary • Aqiqa- Muslim naming ceremony when the baby’s hair is shaved and its weight in gold or silver is given to charity. • Bismallah- the ceremony in some cultures when a Muslim child formally begins to learn about Islam. • Hadith- sayings and action of the Prophet Muhammad(SAW) as recorded by his family and friends. • Halal- that which is permitted or lawful. • Iqamah- the call to stand up for prayer. • Madrassah- Muslim school based at the mosque. • Salah- One of the five pillars of Islam. The five daily prayers.

Muslim upbringing Children are taught to say Salah, read the Quran and the daily visit to the mosque. Aqiqa- 7 days after birth the baby is named. Khitan: boys are circumcised Madrassah 4 years into their life and they start formal education about Islam
