Yuan Dynasty Rule • Lasted from 1271 to 1368. • Followed the Song Dynasty and preceded the Ming Dynasty. • Consisted of modern-day China, Mongolia and its surrounding areas.
Yuan Dynasty Leaders • Yuan Shizu • Founded the Yuan Dynasty, was grandson of Genghis Khan • Moved the Captial to Beijing • Defeated the Southern Song in 1279 • Yuan Yingzong • Son of Renzong • He was killed from a coup of political enemies • Yuan Mingzong • The eldest son of Wuzhong • He was poisoned by Wenzong and resigned for eight months • Yuan Huizong • The eldest son of Mingzong • The Hongjinjun Uprising took place during his reign and Zhu Yuanzhang captured the capital
Yuan Dynasty Achievements • Introduced paper banknotes, that are still used in China today and are called Yuan • Developed drama and the novel • Improved trading routes between Asia and Eurasia • Were the first to use decimal numbers
Notable Events • Ruled by Genghiz Khan and conquered much of central Asia and Europe • 1276- Kublai Khan captured the capital of the Southern Song and unified the Empire • The Yuan drama form of literature was considered another heritage of Chinese literature • 1367- rebel armies led by Zhu Yuanzhang captured the Yuan capital, ending the dynasty’s rule
Contact with other cultures • Marco Polo visited China during the Yuan dynasty and worked as an official Mongol Ruler • Yuan inventions like the magnetic compass, stern post rudder, mechanical clock, gunpowder, and printing moved to Western cultures.
