  3. 2 Phases of Cubism • Cubism- characterized by formal structure, the reduction of natural forms to  their geometrical equivalents, and the organization of planes of a  represented object independently of representational requirements. • Analytic (1910-1912) • Radical and influential • During WWI • Consisted of cubes, arranged in superimposed, transparent planes • Synthetic (1912-1914) • Introduction of bright colors, fattening of space and the elaboration of the picture surface with decorative devices as the stippling technique from neoimpressionism.
