  3. Home Page Completing the square lesson What rhymes with tractor? FACTOR!!! Quadratic Formula Lesson Quiz

  4. Factoring Lesson Factor: To express as a product of two or more quantities General Form: a, b, and c are just constants We are looking for multiples of both “a” and “c” that add up to “b.” You can check this method with FOIL

  5. Factoring Lesson Example: Step 1. Find multiples for both “a” and “c.” Then see if any multiples add up to “b.” Multiples of A: 1 Multiples of C: 1,5

  6. Factoring Lesson Example continued… Step 2: Factor. The equation can be broken up into: (x+5)(x+1)=0 (you can check this with FOIL)

  7. Factoring Method Example cont… (x+5)(x+1) = 0 Step 3: Set each part equal to 0 and solve for x. x+5=0 x+1=0 x= -5 x= -1

  8. Factoring Method Example cont… Step 4: Check Your Work! Simply plug what you got for x back into the original equation and solve. We got both x= -5 and -1

  9. Factoring Method

  10. Your turn! On a separate sheet of paper, solve this equation by factoring. When you think you got it, click the next button to check the answer.

  11. Answer

  12. WOW!!! You finished the factoring portion of this lesson! Sweet job!

  13. Completing the square You can use this method when you are not able to use the factoring method. General form: Steps to solve for x Subtract “c” from both sides: Add to both sides:

  14. Completing the square Solving for x continued Factor the left side: Take the square root of each side: Add to the right side and your done:

  15. Completing the square Example: This problem can’t be solved by the factor method because the multiples of “a” and “c” don’t add up to “b”. So we can use the method of completing the square! Step 1: Subtract “c” over.

  16. Completing the square Example cont… Step 2: Divide “b” by 2, then square that and add it to both sides.

  17. Completing the square Example cont… Step 3: Factor the left side then simply solve for x.

  18. Completing the square Example cont… Step 4: Check your work! When checking your work with this method, you will be able to use a calculator. Plugging in either value for x, you should get 0=0.

  19. Completing the Square

  20. Your turn!!! Solve this equation by completing the square. Click the next button to check your answer

  21. Answer And

  22. WootWoot!!! You completed the “completing the square” portion of this lesson!!! Way to go!!!

  23. Quadratic Formula Use this formula when you can’t factor or if completing the square is a sloppy and tough method. General form:

  24. Quadratic Formula Example: We can’t use the factoring method and completing the square would be messy so we can solve this with the quadratic formula. Step 1: Write out the general form and your “a” “b” “c” terms. “a”= 1. “b”= -13. “c”= 7

  25. Quadratic Formula Example cont… Step 1: “a”=1 “b”=-13 “c”=7 Step 2: Plug these numbers into the general formula.

  26. Quadratic Formula Example cont… Step 3: Compute

  27. Quadratic Formula Example cont… Step 4: Check your solution!!! Just like completing the square, you will be able to check your solutions with a calculator.

  28. Quadratic Formula

  29. Your turn!!! Solve this equation using the quadratic formula. Click the next button to check your answer

  30. Solution!!! and

  31. WOWZERSSSS!!! You completed the Quadratic formula portion of this lesson!!! You are awesome!!!

  32. Quiz QUIZ TIME? I think so!!!
