Announcing the First Online CAS Program: California Advanced Specialty in Discovery

This program provides a focused curriculum covering vital topics such as propounding discovery, responding to discovery requests, protective orders, and electronic discovery in California. To enroll, candidates must have a CLA or CP from NALA, three years of paralegal experience, and complete specific coursework. This certification enhances your skills and meets California's MCLE requirements, promoting professional growth in the paralegal field.

  2. Background • NALA went from CLAS to ACP • CLAS - test based, broad subject matter i.e. civil litigation • ACP - curriculum based, narrower subject area, i.e. discovery • CACPS is changing its California Advanced Specialty (CAS) programs to mirror NALA’s ACP

  3. NALA’s Current ACPs • Discovery • Trial Practice • Contract Management/Contracts Administration • Social Security Disability • Trial Practice • Alternative Dispute Resolution

  4. CAS - Discovery • Add-on of 3 modules to NALA’s ACP • Highlights differences between Federal and California Discovery laws and procedures • Successful completion: Paralegal awarded ACP/CAS in Discovery

Requirements to take CAS - Discovery • Must first have CLA or CP from NALA • Must have at least 3 years of experience as a working paralegal • Must complete APC Course in Discovery • 13 modules covering Federal Discovery • Must complete CACPS Course in Discovery • 3 modules covering California Discovery

  7. MCLE Requirements • CLA – 50 hours MCLE every 5 years (including 5 hours in ethics) • ACP and/or CAS – 20 hours every 5 years • TOTAL - 70 hours every 5 years • Still need to meet Calif. MCLE but most courses qualify for both
