Community Colleges • 112 campuses in California • Associate degrees (many lead to careers) • Transfer to 4-year school (finish Bachelor degree) • To transfer to CSU or UC and some private schools, must complete 60 semester units (2 years) at CC • To transfer to most private schools, only need 30 semester units (1 year) at CC • Articulation agreements or TAG are available for most schools • Is it “easier” to get into a 4-year school as a transfer? • No SAT/ACT Required • www.cccco.edu

D’s and F’s are not accepted. • Don’t need to send transcripts until notified directly by school. Save your money $$. • Check CSU Mentor and individual school online account (To Do List) often • Check email often (daily). Turn off pop-up blocker. Check Spam. • All senior grades are important, even 2nd semester! • Cost to apply: $55.00 per campus

If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words. • Prompt 1: “Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.” • Prompt 2: “Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?” • Make it authentic and real. Private and Out of State Schools • 75 private colleges and universities in California • 3,000+ colleges and universities in US (including public) • All vary in admission requirements and application deadlines • MUST BE ORGANIZED! • Application requirements: application usually with personal essays, extracurricular activities, official transcript, official test scores, letters of recommendation, and sometimes interview • Holistic application process • Early Decision vs. Early Action vs. Restrictive Early Action • Almost 400 schools are part of the Common Application

Understanding AdmissionsProcedures for Private Colleges • Rolling Admissions – Applications are reviewed on a continual basis and a decision is made when all information is received. • Early Decision (Binding) – An application plan where students make a commitment to attend a college if accepted. THEY KNOW! • Early Action – A form of early decision which also requires credentials be submitted early, however, students are not committed to enrolling. • Restrictive Early Action (Single Choice) – A non-commitment enrollment option but a student is only allowed to apply to one college under this option. The expectation is that the student doesn’t apply to any other schools early.

CSU’s (California State University): SAT Reasoning Test or ACT required for admission UC’s (University of California): SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing (SAT Subject Tests are NOT required for admission) Private and Out of State Schools: Check individual admission requirements Community College: No SAT or ACT required. Community College placement test required. Note: All CSU and UC schools will accept test dates through December. Some CSU’s (CalPoly SLO, SDSU) have earlier deadlines. Getting Ready to Apply • Have available: • SSN # • High School CEEB available – RBV CEEB # 053668 • CSIS # - Located at bottom of RBV transcript • Organization with Naviance • 99% of Applications are on line • Use professional and consistent e-mail for all colleges (sexygirrrllll760@gmail.com) • All transcripts, letters of recommendations, and Secondary School Report (SSR) are sent via Naviance.

Letters, Forms & Deadlines for RBV • Most private schools require at least 1 letter of recommendation, from teacher or counselor • Many private schools require Secondary School Report form to be completed by the high school counselor • Before students can request letters and forms, students and parents must complete the Brag Sheet • What is a Brag Sheet? Find it in the “About Me” tab in Naviance • Find instructions on 12th Grade Checklist in Naviance and counseling website

Naviance Research colleges throughout U.S. Track and save colleges to your “favorites” Request and send letters of recommendation from counselors and teachers Request and send official transcripts Search for scholarships $$$ : ALL RBV, local, and some private scholarship are listed Sign up for college visits (here on campus) Counselors send important information, updates, college and scholarship info. through Naviance which goes to your email account.

Letters of Recommendation* • See your counselor to discuss college plans, goals, etc. • MUST complete the following in your Naviance account before you request a letter of recommendation : • Complete “Brag Sheet” • Complete list of “Colleges you’re applying to” • Complete Common Application registration (through commonapp.org)* • Fill out FERPA waiver* • Request official transcripts and make payment IN PERSON to registrar. Don’t waste your money…only send to UC and CSU if they specifically request them. • Send a thank you note. *Private colleges

  38. Letters of Recommendation (con’t) • ASK POLITELY –Request letter of recommendation from teacher and/or counselor IN PERSON. Then, send request with list of schools through Naviance. This helps you keep track . • All requests must be made at least 10 SCHOOL DAYS prior to date you need letter!! (Does not include holidays) • Counselors will send transcript, letter of recommendation, Secondary School Report (SSR), counselor evaluation form (attach letter of recommendation if requested) • Teachers will send following materials to each college: completed Teacher Evaluation form and letter of recommendation

Letters for Scholarships • Many scholarships require letters of recommendation • Follow the same instructions for requesting letters from teachers and/or counselors • Provide counselors an SASE with contact information if you need it mailed • Give at least 10 school days notice, so submit all materials at least 10 school days before the scholarship due date
