  3. Why TEC Feasible MB Alternatives? To eliminate demand for methyl bromide via identification, adaptation and adoption of more profitable, more predictable alternatives, which are commercially available and acceptable

  4. Emergence of TEC feasible MB Alternative Technologies • Various MB alternatives have been technically refined in A5 countries by many stakeholders including the Implementing agencies such as UNEP, UNIDO, UNDP, the World Bank and bilateral partners such as GTZ, among others • The economic viability of technically sound MB alternatives was largely refined by growers and input manufacturers/input suppliers, who are profit-driven. • Well-developed commercial value-chain systems have emerged to support the refined alternatives

Challenges Necessitating TEC Feasible Methyl Bromide Alternatives • Low price of methyl bromide: A huge challenge on the economics and commercial feasibility of Alternatives • Economics of MB alternatives vs Extreme poverty levels, low technical capacity and food insecurity in some A5 countries • Development of technically sound methyl bromide alternatives not matched with economic/commercial feasibility necessitate

  7. Challenges Necessitating TEC Feasible Methyl Bromide Alternatives Cont’ • Farmers need to know how profitable the promoted alternatives are; must be competitive • Low technical capacity in MB alternatives in many A5 countries • Inadequate/lack of documentation of TEC feasible MB alternatives

Conclusions • The emergence of TEC feasible MB alternatives coupled with a new value-chain system is the hope for sustainable phase-out • Emerging TEC feasible alternatives are largely undocumented and thus lessons learnt could be easily forgotten • Technical capacity in TEC feasible MB alternative technology is a challenge in many A5 countries • TEC feasible MB alternative technologies need mainstreaming into the educational curricula

Recommendations • Collaboration between emerging value-chain players in TEC feasible MB alternatives, need to be strengthened and harnessed • Emerging value-chain players need formal engagement for technical capacity building • TEC feasible alternatives to methyl bromide need to be documented preferably in a value-chain approach; lest we forget the lessons learnt and reinvent the wheel!
